Hey
Astree And The Leaves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
I said hey Joe where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
I'm going out to find my woman now, she's been runnin' around with some other man
I said I'm going out and find my woman now she's been runnin' around with some other man

Well hey Joe now what are you gonna do?
Well hey Joe tell me what are you gonna do?
Well I guess I'll shoot my woman now, that's what I'll do
I said I guess I'll shoot them both before I'm through

Hey Joe tell me where are you gonna go?
Well hey Joe I said where are you gonna go?
Well I guess I'll go down to my place in Mexico

Said I guess I'll go down to where a man can be free
And there ain't gonna be no hangman's ropes put around me

Overall Meaning

At first glance, Astree and the Leaves' song "Hey!!" may seem like a straightforward cover of Jimi Hendrix's classic "Hey Joe." However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the band has taken the original song and subverted its meaning. While Hendrix's version, and countless others by artists such as The Byrds and Patti Smith, tells the story of a jealous man who plans to shoot his unfaithful lover, Astree and the Leaves have changed the lyrics to make the singer more sympathetic. In this version, the man is going to find his woman, not to seek revenge, but perhaps to try and reconcile with her. The line "I guess I'll shoot them both before I'm through" is also changed to "I guess I'll try and get her back before I'm through." This reimagining of the song gives it a new dimension, transforming it from a tale of violence and jealousy to one of love and forgiveness.

Additionally, the band's decision to cover "Hey Joe" is interesting in and of itself. The song has a long and storied history, with countless artists from a variety of genres putting their own spin on it. Hendrix's version is perhaps the most famous, but it was actually a cover itself, originated by a Los Angeles folk singer named Tim Rose. The fact that Astree and the Leaves chose to cover such an iconic song demonstrates their willingness to take risks and experiment with their sound. At the same time, the changes they made to the lyrics and the arrangement show a respect for the original material and a desire to make it their own.
