Lennaert and Astrid kept on working together for a long time, with Lennaert providing lyrics for many songs on many of Astrids albums.
Since 1980 Astrid has been performing songs with her own lyrics, in her very own, unique way. After productions with other well known Dutch artists, she has stayed out of the recording business for some years. Today she is back in town, sounding like never before!
Though only singles were released in the 70s she stayed active until the present day.
Maria

The song "Maria" by Astrid Nijgh tells the story of a woman named Maria who sits by the canal in the afternoon, reading a book in silence. She dreams of being a countess who waits for her lover, who is late to arrive. The tea light, lamp, and rose-patterned wallpaper in her room remind her of her mother's love for young sailors who pass by and whistle at her. However, Maria does not pay attention to the passing men or her surroundings; she is focused on her book, and the countess who patiently waits.
As the evening approaches, Maria waits for the baron with his mantle of silk to arrive at her doorstep. The horses stop in front of her house, and the baron rushes to her arms. However, a man on the canal watches them from afar, feeling lonely and left out. Maria doesn't notice him and turns her attention to the night, the baron, and the roses he brought for her. She continues reading, closing her eyes as she laughs.
The lyrics of "Maria" portray a woman who longs for love and attention, but is too focused on her fantasies and books to notice the world around her. She dreams of being a countess and waits for her lover to arrive every day, but when he finally does, she is too preoccupied with her own happiness to notice the man who watches them from afar. The song speaks to the human tendency to create myths and stories and to lose sight of reality, and how this can lead us to ignore those around us who seek love and companionship.
