Growing up in a small town (Berkåk, Norway), Astrid got into music at an early age and at six she started to play the piano. Not long after she was also playing several instruments, in addition to sing and write songs. At the age of 16 she participated in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol in 2013. During her time in the competition, she released her single "Shattered" as Astrid Smeplass. The single was written by her, Lars K. Hushoft and Melanie Fontana. "Shattered" has been streamed over 5 million times and sold to gold in just one week. It is therefore the most popular single from the last five finalists. Astrid got signed to Playroom Artist after placing as number five in Pop Idol. She released her first single 2AM under her new artist image at the age of 18 on Universal Music. "2AM" was released in the USA in 2015. She also released a cover-version of the single FourFiveSeconds which has been doing well on radio in Norway in 2015.
In 2015 she featured the Canadian artist Shawn Mendes on the song Air on his album Handwritten that placed at number 1 in the Billboard 200 chart in April 2015.
Astrid released her track “Hyde” produced by the raging popular Lido (The Weeknd, Alt-J, Bastille, Banks) and co-produced by the Swedish duo Cal Maui & Blisse. The track was premiered on Fader Magazine and represents the first new music from Astrid S since her debut hit single “2AM” and her appearance on Avicii’s July 2015 “Waiting For Love” remix EP.
Astrid won her first MTV EMA award as Best Norwegian Act, got two out of four awards at P3 Gull and was nominated for Best Song (“2AM”) at the Norwegian Grammy Awards.
During the winter, she has been working on finalizing her highly anticipated debut EP, which is due out this spring (May 20). Meanwhile, the latest single, Matoma x Astrid S - “Running Out,” has been picking up traction across the world and has passed 50 million streams on Spotify alone.
Astrid S is signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing as one of their youngest songwriters.

And I'm out here on my own
Yeah, I'm alright
I'm not lonely, though I'm all alone
It feels nice
When it comes so easily
And I'm too high
To remember how it used to be
So good
Cleaning out the closet
It's so good
I pull myself together
Like I should
Feeling all the things I never could
It's so good
Cold sweat run down my body
Mhm, no one can stop me
When you don't need nobody
Mhm, it hits different
Got my hands on my body (got my)
Mhm, no one can stop me (no, no)
When you don't need nobody
Mhm, it hits different
Sweeter, like a song I used to know
I remember all the words by heart
I sing along much better
Than I ever did before
And it's never
No, it's never felt so good
Cleaning out the closet like I should
It's so good
Cold sweat run down my body
Mhm, no one can stop me
When you don't need nobody
Mhm, it hits different
Got my hands on my body (got my)
Mhm, no one can stop me (no, no)
When you don't need nobody
Don't need nobody (no)
Hands on my body
No one can stop me
Don't need nobody
Mhm, it hits different
Cold sweat run down my body
Mhm, no one can stop me
When you don't need nobody
Mhm, it hits different
Got my hands on my body (got my)
Mhm, no one can stop me (no, no)
When you don't need nobody
Mhm, it hits different
The lyrics to Astrid S's song "Hits Different" capture the feeling of being alone but still finding comfort and empowerment in solitude. The singer is out on her own during another late night, but she assures that she's alright and not feeling lonely, despite being by herself. There's a sense of freedom and ease that comes with this solitude, making it feel nice and enjoyable. The mention of being too high suggests that she might be in an elevated state of mind, perhaps metaphorically indicating a feeling of detachment from the way things used to be.
The chorus emphasizes the positive effects of this independence. Cleaning out the closet symbolizes getting rid of emotional baggage and pulling oneself together. It feels good to finally be able to experience and feel things that were previously inaccessible or suppressed. The use of cold sweat running down the body and the notion of no one being able to stop her emphasizes a sense of unapologetic self-assurance. When she doesn't need anybody, it hits different, implying that this newfound freedom and self-reliance have a unique and special impact on her.
The second verse continues the theme of reclaiming one's identity and embracing the past. The mention of a song she used to know and remembering all the words by heart suggests a nostalgic connection to her own history. She now sings along much better, signifying growth and improvement. The repetition of how good it feels to clean out the closet reinforces the idea of releasing old burdens and finding a renewed sense of self.
Overall, "Hits Different" is a song that celebrates the power of independence and self-discovery. It highlights the transformative impact of embracing solitude, moving on from the past, and finding joy in one's own company.
