As naturalised children of immigrants from the Caribbean, part of the aftermath of World War II, the children were moved to London. They attended a local high school near Ladbroke Grove, and various junior schools as Tan Tan children of immigrants from the Caribbean around West London in 1975. Vocalist Brinsley Forde had a brief career on television on the British children's television series "Here Come the Double Deckers" in 1970-71.
The original members of Aswad were Brinsley Forde, George Oban, Drummie Zeb, and Donald Griffiths. Courtney Hemmings was a frequent contributor in the 1970s, including as part of the backing band on Burning Spear's 1979 Live album, recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London.
They became one the U.K.'s top reggae bands with songs, typical of the time, about the oppression of black youth, such as "Three Babylon" and "It's Not Our Wish", and the powerful jazz-influenced instrumental "Warrior Charge".
The band gained a wider audience with the New Chapter album (1981). "Fire", the opening track gained wide recognition when it was used as the backing rhythm for Dennis Brown's "Promised Land."
Among Aswad's catalogue of hits is "Don't Turn Around", a pop hit in 1988. This track was originally a B-side to Tina Turner's hit "Typical Male", which was later covered by Ace of Base; and a reggae flavoured rendition of "Best of My Love", first popularised and written by The Eagles. Their next hit, Shine, was released in 1994. Another track was the upbeat 1998 remake of The Police's "Invisible Sun", performed with Sting.
The band also hold the distinction of having played with each one of the ex-Wailers.

And she's really with me all the time
And in the winter time when it's cold
Her love shines through like sunshine
And I need your love every day and every night I need your love
I need your love every day and every night I need your love
And in the Spring time she's there my love
And she's really with me all the time
Her love shines through like sunshine
And I need your love every day and every night I need your love
I need your love every day and every night I need your love
No one's to blame try to overstand
We gave what we could oh yes
Giving and taking receiving Jah blessing
We could have made it if we tried
So I need your love every day and every night I need your love
I need your love every day and every night I need your love
Hear the children sing you know it's the right time
Hear the joy bells ring you know it's the right time
Hear the children sing you know it's the right time
Hear the joy bells ring you know it's the right lime
I need your love every day and every night I need your love
The song "I Need Your Love" by Aswad is a love song that speaks of a deeper relationship. The lyrics speak of how the love of the singer’s partner never fails them, even in the colder seasons, it shines through like sunshine. The song paints a picture of a love that is constant and unchanging, a love that is needed every day and every night. The lyrics suggest that no matter the season, the love of their partner is always present.
The song is not just about a romantic relationship, but also suggests that love should be given freely and without any expectation of receiving anything in return. The lyrics also speak about Jah's, a Rastafarian term for God, blessing and how they could have made it if they tried. The singer seems to be asking for forgiveness from Jah for not doing enough to make their relationship work, and for not appreciating the love that was given to them.
In the end, the lyrics speak of children singing and joy bells ringing, portraying a sense of hope and light in a world full of darkness. The singer urges their partner to continue loving them, and they promise to reciprocate by giving everything they can in return. The song ends with the repeated phrase, "I need your love every day and every night, I need your love," emphasizing the importance of love in a person's life.
