Asylum Party was one of the best bands that emerged out of the so called "Nouvelle Vague", the French New Wave. Like British bands such as And Also the Trees, Sad Lovers and Giants, The Comsat Angels and The Chameleons they played a very dreamy, refined kind of post-punk.The band was founded in 1985 in Courbevoie, France and consisted of Thierry Sobรฉzyk, Philippe Planchon, and Pascale Macรฉ. Founding members Thierry Sobezyk and Philippe Planchon, both being childhood friends, formed the band in 1985 shortly after their previous band dissolved. Chipping money in together, the two bought a drum machine and so forth was the band formed. After the release of their mini lp Picture One in 1988, the band acquired their friend Pascale Mace and recorded their first full album Borderline in 1989. Soon after the release of their second full album Mother, the bands future started to look bleak. Because of financial restraints and lack of commercial success, Asylum Party disbanded in 1990.

Asylum Party Lyrics

And he stopped talking
Something broke in the head
Young child stopped looking out
Something talks away
Some shrieks of laughter
Besounding in the air
Take off those pictures
That make me cry, that kill me
Take off those pictures
That make me cry, that kill me
Something comes too late
Lower than whispers
Something has come too late
The mad desire to be here again
Take off those pictures
That make me cry, that kill me
Take off those pictures
That make me cry, that kill me
The lyrics of Asylum Party's "Pictures" are haunting and create an eerie atmosphere. The song speaks of a broken individual who has lost the ability to communicate and engage with the world around him. The opening lines "Something broke one day, And he stopped talking" paint a picture of a person who may have suffered some trauma or experienced a significant loss that has left him emotionally disconnected.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more despairing, with lines like "Take off those pictures That make me cry, that kill me." It seems that the person is surrounded by reminders of what he has lost, and these images are causing him immense pain. The repetition of this line throughout the song reinforces the intensity of the emotions being conveyed.
Overall, "Pictures" is a melancholy song that elicits a deep sense of empathy for the individual at its center. The lyrics suggest that there may be no easy answers or solutions to the person's pain, leaving the listener to sit with the weight of the emotions being evoked.

This has to be their best song. It's a shame more people don't know of them and they seem to get missed out when people talk or write about 80s darkwave or coldwave.

@Olaoluwa Afolayan ๐ totally right โ

@Olaoluwa Afolayan If you like Asylum Party, you might try listening to Clan Of Xymox - their first 2 albums, for starters - 'Clan Of Xymox' & 'Medusa'. You can find both albums here on Youtube. Asylum Party and Clan Of Xymox are both excellent bands and two of my personal all-time favorites. Same with The Chameleons...
Olaoluwa Afolayan
@River Of Blacklights yeah I can definitely hear the influence of The Chameleons here. Iโm not that familiar with Clan of Xymox unfortunately lol
River Of Blacklights
@Olaoluwa Afolayan Yeah, I've heard others compare them to those bands as well. To me, it sounds more like early Clan Of Xymox with a bit of The Chameleons mixed in there, more than anything else.
