my tongue ties this noose around my neck
At Will Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i sit, still
watching the mantis become extinct
the taste of citrus fades off my tongue
with every turn of the ratchet
walk...outside-leave your room
walk with me, and we'll find God
(we'll find Jah)
wait for my tongue
to build the serpent a new home
i hang in silence
as you stand there
with your pretty feet on the ground
walk...outside-leave your room
walk with me, and we'll find God
(we'll find Jah)
searching, for tomorrow
(i wish i was allergic, to the sting or to be stung so i would go)
blind, am i (am just a man)
everything tastes (like an orchard)

they all (begin to look like Eve)
(i hang from the tree) in the garden of Jah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to At Will's "my tongue ties this noose around my neck" convey a sense of stillness and introspection, as if the singer is observing the world around him and contemplating his own existence. The mention of the mantis becoming extinct could be interpreted as a metaphor for the impermanence of life and the passage of time. The taste of citrus fading off the tongue suggests a loss of sensation or pleasure, which could be related to feelings of ennui or detachment.

The line "walk with me, and we'll find God" (or "Jah," a Rastafarian term for God) suggests a desire to find meaning or purpose in life, and perhaps to explore spirituality as a way of doing so. The reference to the serpent and the tree in the garden of Jah could be taken as a nod to biblical imagery, with the singer suggesting that he is grappling with moral and existential questions.

Overall, the lyrics to "my tongue ties this noose around my neck" are somewhat cryptic, leaving room for interpretation and personal reflection. The song seems to evoke a sense of searching and longing, while also acknowledging the limitations of human understanding.

it's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

‘Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

‘Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

when I was six years old I went on a road trip across the united states. My mom's brother gave us this song burned to a cd and we played it all the way across country. I knew all the words and loved this song. Now it reminds me of that time and makes me smile at how much my life has changed.

This album holds so many memories for me too. I first heard it years ago when my friend and I went camping for her birthday. Listening to this driving through dark forests in the countryside really hits differently.
I can also just relate to it, honestly.
