Red Planet
At the Drive-In Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

do you think i mind all these blatant stares
Cuz my words are like all you
People, meaningless
i never liked the mime, imitates
The shrine, the shrine of college
Cretin bags, yeah come pick me a winner
Mr. A&R dinero thug
Do you know the red planet?
Do you know yourself?
x2
Do do do company policy
Do do do all rights reserved
Do do do and this i know
Do do do funds are pending
Do do do you're a sales figure

Used to be that fun was our only
Main objective, but Mr. old school
Will tell the new fuel, they're
Igniting in the wrong direction
Cash crop clubs in the entertainment
Section

Do you know the red planet?
Do you know yourself?
x2
Do do do company policy
Do do do all rights reserved
Do do do and this i know
Do do do funds are pending
Do do do you're a sales figure

I don't mind if you take me there
In fact I want to see the stars
We'll take the plunge in a fabric boat

And we'll sink together, just sign my
Destiny and I will seal it forever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of At the Drive-In's "Red Planet" seem to express a sense of frustration towards the music industry, as well as criticism towards those who conform within it. The singer seems unphased by the attention he receives from those who are only interested in him for his status or image, and he feels that his words are lost on an audience that doesn't care about their true meaning. The reference to the "mime" could be interpreted as a comment on the superficiality of the music industry, as mimes are known for their exaggerated actions that lack emotional depth. The line "the shrine of college cretin bags" could be a criticism of those who enter the industry solely for the promise of financial gain.

The lyrics also touch on the idea that music used to be about having fun and enjoying the creative process, but has since become obsessed with making money. The line "cash crop clubs in the entertainment section" suggests that entertainment has become a business rather than an art form. The repeated question "do you know the red planet? do you know yourself?" could be interpreted as a challenge to the listener to consider what their values are and whether they are truly living up to them.

Overall, "Red Planet" seems to be a commentary on the music industry's commercialization and the challenges of preserving artistic authenticity within that context.

Line by Line Meaning

do you think i mind all these blatant stares
I don't care if people stare at me, because to me they are meaningless.

Cuz my words are like all you People, meaningless
My words are like the meaningless conversations that most people have every day.

i never liked the mime, imitates The shrine, the shrine of college Cretin bags, yeah come pick me a winner Mr. A&R dinero thug
I never liked the fake people who try to be someone they're not in order to fit in, like the college students who worship the same idols. I don't want to be associated with those who are just trying to become a 'winner' in the entertainment industry.

Do you know the red planet? Do you know yourself? x2
Do you really know yourself and your place in the world? Are you aware of the vast unknowns that exist beyond Earth?

Do do do company policy Do do do all rights reserved Do do do and this i know Do do do funds are pending Do do do you're a sales figure
We're all just products or figures in a capitalist system, and we often overlook how we are being controlled by company policy or even owned entirely by the powers that be. The money that we strive so hard for is really out of our control.

Used to be that fun was our only Main objective, but Mr. old school Will tell the new fuel, they're Igniting in the wrong direction Cash crop clubs in the entertainment Section
We used to try to have fun, but now we've been sold on the idea that we need to be productive and successful instead. The 'old school' people think that we're doing things wrong or moving too fast, especially when we're just trying to gain status by going to exclusive clubs.

I don't mind if you take me there In fact I want to see the stars We'll take the plunge in a fabric boat And we'll sink together, just sign my Destiny and I will seal it forever
I'm not afraid of the unknown, and I want to explore what the universe has to offer. We'll go there together and face any consequences together, knowing full well that we have committed to this path for the rest of our lives.
