After several personnel changes, Kano and Brown recorded an eight song EP in 1995 with bassist Alex McKinney and lead guitarist Grey Brewster. The "Green Album," as it is widely known, sold about 10,000 copies.
In 1996 the band was signed by Atlantic Records. They released their major label debut, Radiance, in 1998. The first single, "What I Didn't Know," was a minor hit. During the recording phase for their next album, Brown left the band to attend college. He was replaced by Jeremy Vogt, who performed with the likes of Tonic and The Connells. Brewster also dissolved his membership with the group and was replaced by Mike Garrigan, the lead singer and songwriter of Collapsis.
This new line up played their first show on March 31, 2001, at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The new set included Garrigan's Collapsis anthem, "October". [correction they actually played their first show with this lineup in Boone, NC]
Athenaeum's sophomore album Athenaeum was released on September 18, 2001. However, it received little promotion in the wake of the September 11th attacks.
Athenaeum was eventually dropped by Atlantic Records. They toured for an additional three years and released their final record, Hourglass, a collection of rare outtakes and demos, before performing their last show at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on December 28, 2004.
Kano and Garrigan subsequently formed the band mg4 (with Alex McKinney, the original bassist for Athenaeum and Jeremy Vogt), who released an EP in the summer of 2004 titled Gravity Affects Me. "mg4" continues touring to date and information on shows can be found at Mike Garrigan's official website.

Lacy
Athenaeum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She pulls upon her sweater to keep the warmness in
There ain't no reason why, but I know she'll never lie
Lacy found a feather, baby
She's gonna blow it to the sky
And when the morning comes
Her body will be numb
And she said, "I don't wanna go
But here I fear I'm losing all control
Lacy found a feather lying in the sand.
She knelt to pick it up and something grabbed her hand
There ain't no reason why, but I know she'll never lie
Lacy found a feather, baby
She knows it's gonna die
And when the morning comes
Her body will be numb
And Lacy's prayers will fly
And she said, “I don't wanna go
But here I fear I'm losing all control
No, I don't wanna go
Baby, why don't we lose all control?
And in the end we'll see how happy we could be
If we could risk it all
Can we risk it all?
The story of "Lacy" by Athenaeum is a tragic tale of a woman who has lost control of her life and is searching for a way out. The song starts with Lacy finding a feather and deciding to throw it in the wind. She then pulls on her sweater to keep warm, implying that she might be in a cold or difficult situation. The lyrics "There ain't no reason why, but I know she'll never lie" suggest that Lacy might be struggling with mental health issues and might not be able to fully express what she's going through.
As the song progresses, we see Lacy becoming more and more desperate to regain control of her life. The lyrics "And when the morning comes, her body will be numb" indicate that Lacy might be metaphorically or literally losing feeling in her body. The line "And she said, 'I don't wanna go, but here I fear I'm losing all control'" suggests that Lacy is afraid of what might happen to her if she doesn't take control of her life. The second verse of the song is similar to the first, with Lacy finding a feather but this time, something grabs her hand. This might be a metaphor for the things that are holding her back or controlling her.
The song ends on a hopeful note, with the lines "And in the end we'll see how happy we could be, if we could risk it all. Can we risk it all?" The hope is that Lacy will take a chance and risk everything to regain control of her life and find happiness. Overall, the song is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and the struggles that many people face.
