When Roosevelt came to the Land of the humming bird / Shouts of welcome were heard / His visit to the island is bound to be / An epoch in local history / Definitely marking the new era / Between Trinidad and America

Always marveled at the colonial innocence of this song! From our modern perspective, it is difficult to not just get off on the irony of a third world singer expressing such a positive view of the USA , but it is heartfelt adoration at its finest. I seem to recall that there was a grand tradition of songs like this, that pretty much functioned as street journalism. (It also helps that I have similar feelings when I think about FDR.)
Things are so damn complicated in our world today. This is very refreshing to hear, because it allows us to vicariously feel the basic, real feelings that are now lacking in our lives.

It was certainly a factor that the US, relying on neo-colonialism, was opposed to the direct imperialism of British control. IMO the hostility from Britain toward the US on this basis is fascinating to study.

@Spetzer I don't know if there are any CDs that are ALL Atilla, but his work appears on many calypso compilations. I recommend "Calypsos from Trinidad - 1930s" on Arhoolie Records (a reissue of the LP "Where was Butler?" with added tracks...its focus is on current events calypsos from the '30s). Roosevelt in Trinidad on Rounder Records is good but OOP. If you really adore classic calypso, shell out for the Calypso box from Bear Family Records.

Alan Horton: I'm American and a big FDR fan, but you're distorting slightly the US's role in WWII. Never forget, please, that the US delayed its entry into that abominable war and that if it had entered earlier, the war undoubtedly would have ended sooner and far fewer would have suffered.
The UK did an amazing job of keeping Hitler at bay, and UK citizens paid a terrible price -- not just loss of life, tho that was immense, but economic hardship: food rationing thru 1954; tremendous debt to the US, because $$ was needed to help the ravaged UK get back on its feet. The US should have given, not lent, $$ to the UK, because if not for the UK's phenomenal efforts, the world today might be very different.

@@JJ21210 How about this: in 1919 in Versailles the French and the English set up an extortion scheme for the Germans, after a war for which all parties where responsible (though, it must be said, the Jerries where by far the more atrocious - then already). By continually extorting Germany the English made democracy impossible, and pop! there was Adolf. Some people, among which someone called Winston Churchill, saw the Versailles treaty not only as the end of a war, but also as the start of the next one. And in 1935 & 1938, the English government behaved like sissies towards Adolf.
So? So the English people paid dearly and fought like hell because of the mistakes of THEIR OWN lowlife politicians. It was not the first time (1914!) and it will not be the last (2019!).

At the Versailles peace conference, President Woodrow Wilson was fighting to not extort the Germans because it clearly was unfair after the continent had been ravaged by war, and it was looking like Wilson's perspective would come out on top. But Wilson fell ill with the Spanish flu before the conference was over. He never recovered fully, and his personality changed as a result, so the French president, whatever his name was (as far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter because he was a nationalist, and nationalist opinions are invalid), got everything he wanted and Germany was scammed.

I don't think it is sarcastic. Roosevelt was viewed around the world as a great man and world leader. Music like this, from this time period, is pretty honest.

I think it drips with sarcasm, but it not necessarily against FDR. It is grounded in the reality of experience in Trinidad, a pawn in the struggle of the world powers. It's a truly great song because it captures such a pivotal moment in history and relates to real people's lives.
