Cox met his collaborator and best friend, Lockett Pundt, in high school. He started recording on a cassette karaoke machine in 1994 when he was in sixth grade. He has used the name "Atlas Sound" since then, as it was the name of the company that manufactured the tape machine. Cox has also recorded as part of other bands, such as the short lived "Wet Dreams", an all-girl garage/noise band in which he played drums. He also recorded several tracks on the Black Lips second album We Did Not Know the Forest Spirit Made the Flowers Grow, playing drums on the song Notown Blues from that album.

Atlas Sound Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I found them really late
So in my mansion I'd sit
Waiting for it all to end
My material, my friends
I made lots of friends
I made lots and lots of friends
See the horror on my face
I can finally leave this place
Over Blue Star Moonbeam Trace
I can't remember my address
In Atlas Sound's song The Shakes, the listener is introduced to a character that has found both money and fame, but too late in their life. The lyrics suggest that despite being in a mansion surrounded by material possessions and friends, they are still filled with a sense of dissatisfaction and appeared to be waiting for it all to end. The line "My material, my friends" suggests that they recognize that their possessions and social circle are not enough to fulfill them.
