That Night
Atmosphere Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't even know if I can write this song
Caught on a beam between right and wrong
Gotta keep forward, keep straight
For the sake of why we stay awake all night long
Its not up for interpret
Paranoid of exploiting the verdict
But in the same breath
I got thoughts that I wanna express and let surface
This ain't for props or the pop culture
Its about a balloon that got punctured
The sunshine'S fun til it burns someone
And we all got burnt that summer
She was sixteen.
Another young angel with clipped wings
She came to the shows
But I never met her, don't even know if she was listening
That night, we lost a supporter
That night, somebody lost their daughter
He raped and killed her at the venue
Can't comprehend what her friends must have went through
That night the sun went dark
Now watch everyone on the tourbus fall apart
That night, lord have mercy
The music died, that night, in Alberquerque

Stop, it can't be true right
This type of real deaont happen to you right?
Crescent, Murs, Dibbs, Jaybird
I wanna go home now and start a new life
Wish I could protect the kids
I guess safety's a hit or miss
With a prior convicted sex-offense against a 4 year old
Why we let you live?
Don't know what I'm trying to write
But there's a part of me that keeps dyin at night
When I think about her mother
I become another number that wants you to suffer
You're locked up for now, you have no more chances to steal the children's laughs

And if you ever find God
Better pray to her and ask that we never cross paths

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Atmosphere’s song That Night deal with a dark and tragic event that occurred during their tour in Albuquerque. A young girl who attended one of their shows was raped and murdered by a convicted sex offender. The lyrics express a sense of guilt, confusion, and grief about the incident. The first verse talks about how difficult it is to write a song about such a horrific event and how the band members are caught between right and wrong. The lyrics also mention how they feel the need to stay awake all night and keep moving forward. The singer is aware that the topic is sensitive and says there is no room for interpretation. He has thoughts to express, and he hopes to let them surface. He also assures the audience that this song is not about seeking attention or fame.

The second verse paints a picture of the girl who was murdered. She was young and had come to their shows, but the singer never met her. The verses also mention how the attack has affected everyone involved, from the victim’s friends to the band members themselves. The singer makes a reference to Don McLean’s classic song “American Pie” when he says that the music died that night in Albuquerque. The chorus expresses a sense of disbelief that something like this could happen, and how the band members wish they could go back and start a new life.

Overall, the lyrics capture the raw emotions and profound sadness of a senseless tragedy. The band members are struggling to come to terms with what happened and to find a way to move forward. They are haunted by the memory of the girl who lost her life and by the pain of those who knew her. The song is an honest and heartfelt tribute to a young life cut short and a reminder of the importance of addressing the issue of sexual violence.

Marisa was the sweetest human. She was an excellent friend. Not a day goes by that I don't think about her. Still.

@liznarducci3461

I’m so sorry 😞 I just learned of the events that this is based upon, today , and it hurt to learn that

@vanillat01

I’m so sorry that happened to your friend.

@Klos1neMN

I think the most powerful line in this whole song is that "And if you ever find God you'd better pray to her and ask that we never cross paths." A sentiment we all can agree on.

@1joeyforte

Klos1neMN agree
for me it's
"when I think about her mother I become another number that wants you to suffer" that line hits me real hard

Grateful for art. Marissa was a friend of mine. And I was at this show at Sunshine Theater. Hard to revisit this. Doing what we can with it.. :( miss her.
