Sound of Silence
Atrocity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Originally performed by Simon and Garfunkel]

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

'Fools' said I, 'You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.'
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, 'The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls.'
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Atrocity's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" delve into themes of loneliness, silence, and societal disconnect. The song's narrator addresses "darkness" as a metaphor for this silence, a constant companion, and an old friend. The song's protagonist seeks comfort in the "sound of silence" and recognizes the vision, which was "planted in his brain," continues to haunt him. The singer describes a dream where he walks alone on "narrow streets of cobblestone" under the glow of a streetlight. He sees people who are "talking without speaking," "hearing without listening," and "writing songs that voices never share," illustrating the superficial communication that occurs in society.

The singer becomes frustrated, recognizing that this "silence" is a cancer that grows and calls his peers "fools" for not recognizing it. He tries to reach them, to teach and embrace them, but his words fall "like silent raindrops" into the "wells of silence." As the song progresses, it becomes evident that the "neon god" has taken the place of the prophets and turned tenement halls and subway walls into a place for communication. The song's final line—whispered in the sounds of silence—emphasizes the song's overall message that communication, despite its prevalence in society, is still inconsequential.

Han pasado 19 años de tu partida pero en mi corazón aun estas presente; para ti abuelita, nunca te olvidare

Tremendo Cover, de los mejores covers que existen.

While I understand all of the comments about the lack of harmonies, and I get it, I think this version is better without them. To my ear, it combines a great metal track with vocals reminiscent of a camp-fire sing-along, and I love it! I especially dig the use of the piano and strings throughout the mix.

It was cool. Maybe more

detonator82

There ARE harmonies, they're just buried in the mix a bit.
