The final verse portrays a person trapped in a world of their own making, consumed by self-doubt and spiraling into madness.
The song's theme of illusion and self-deception is reflected in the cover art: a person's face is split down the middle, one half in the light and the other in the dark. The title "IX" is Latin for "nine," which could refer to the nine circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno.
