IX
Au-Dessus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For every brick that you put in building your own fortress
There's a different army aiming to it to destroy
Look around, what is that around you? Does this look familiar?
Are you in a place where you feel intact and safe?
Walls made of deluded darkness and depths filled with despair
This prison of self-hatred waits to claim yet another prey
Go on, lock yourself and throw away the key
Join that herd of brainless zombies feeding from its shepherd's greed.
Stop whining when these cuts start hurting
Blood starts dripping out of wounds made by your ""saviors"" whip
Step in line in front of trough full of misery of others and wait for your turn to die
You wash yourself in tears of others
and add your own to global pond
I see you're trapped inside aworld full of delusion

Hiding under a cloak of self-pity
You plunge deeper into madness sown by your wounded mind

Overall Meaning

In "IX" by Au-Dessus, the first verse paints a picture of building a fortress - a place of safety and security - but reminds the listener that there are always forces at work trying to tear it down. The second verse highlights the grim reality of the walls we build for ourselves. They're not made of impenetrable stone, but of "deluded darkness and depths filled with despair." The feeling of safety is, in fact, an illusion. The third verse is a call to action, a plea to stop dwelling in self-pity and join the ranks of those blindly following their "shepherd's greed." The final verse portrays a person trapped in a world of their own making, consumed by self-doubt and spiraling into madness.

The song's theme of illusion and self-deception is reflected in the cover art: a person's face is split down the middle, one half in the light and the other in the dark. The title "IX" is Latin for "nine," which could refer to the nine circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno.
