The first stanza of "Contempler l'abîme" begins by describing a haunting image of graves screaming out to death while alone and facing the vast ocean. The lyrics then go on to suggest that all of us are in a state of reaching, trying to grasp something before we inevitably fall from the cliff we're standing on. The memories of all those who came before us remain at the top of the cliff, unable to say goodbye.
The second stanza offers a bit of contrast, describing how memories still live on in the dry, barren lands. However, despite the idea that the heart no longer beats or bleeds in those lands, the shadows of the void still hover ominously. The last two lines of this stanza are highly evocative, channeling the idea that we can never truly escape the depths of things, lost forever far from the shore.
