Audioslave released three successful albums, received three Grammy nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Cornell issued a statement in February 2007 that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences." As the other three members were busy with the Rage Against the Machine reunion, and Morello and Cornell had each released solo albums in 2007, Audioslave was officially disbanded.

Hide in the hours before sunrise
Pray for me not, I won't lose sight
Of where I belong and where you lie
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
Shipwreck the sun, I'm on your side
An army of one, onward we'll ride
And whisper your songs, birds to the air
We will bury all of our burdens there
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
For the best time you've had
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying out of time
For the best time you've had
For the best time you've had
Ooh the best time you've had
Heaven's dead when you get sad
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying out of time
For the best time you've had
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying out of time
I'll take it all, arrows or guns
Hundreds or more to save you from one
To save you from one
To save you from one
Yeah heaven's dead when you get sad
The lyrics to "Heaven's Dead" by Audioslave explore the theme of finding hope and solace during difficult times. The opening lines, "Anchor the night, open the sky, hide in the hours before sunrise," suggest a feeling of being lost and searching for something to hold onto. The singer then asks that they not be prayed for, as they won't lose sight of where they belong and where their loved ones lie.
The chorus, "Heaven's dead when you get sad, I see your wishes flying out of time, for the best time you've had," touches on the idea that when one is feeling low, it can feel like their hopes and dreams are slipping away. The line, "shipwreck the sun, I'm on your side, an army of one, onward we'll ride," further emphasizes the theme of fighting through tough times with the support of others.
The final verse, "I'll take it all, arrows or guns, hundreds or more to save you from one," is a declaration of loyalty and devotion to the ones we care about. The song builds to a powerful conclusion with the repeated refrain, "yeah heaven's dead when you get sad."
Overall, "Heaven's Dead" is a powerful and emotional song that explores the theme of hope and perseverance during tough times.
