Audioslave released three successful albums, received three Grammy nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Cornell issued a statement in February 2007 that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences." As the other three members were busy with the Rage Against the Machine reunion, and Morello and Cornell had each released solo albums in 2007, Audioslave was officially disbanded.

On a sea of gray
On my knees I pray to you
Help me find the dawn
Of the dying day
Won't you light my way
From time to time he strays
I compare my life to this
To this I relate
And I'm willing
To listen to your answers
And I'm not afraid
To tell you I need you today
Won't you light my way
So when I'm lost
Or I'm tired and depraved
Or when my high bullet mind
Goes astray won't you light my way
Don't save it for another day, hey
Won't you light my way
The lyrics to Audioslave's "Light My Way" speak to the human experience of feeling lost and in need of guidance. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that he is in a desperate situation, "In my hour of need, on a sea of gray, on my knees I pray to you." He is seeking help to find his way through a difficult time, "Help me find the dawn of the dying day." The chorus then repeats the plea, "Won't you light my way?"
The second verse draws on the metaphor of a bullet to describe the singer's own life. The singer acknowledges that like a bullet, he too can stray from his path. He is willing to listen to guidance and not afraid to admit that he needs help, "And I'm willing to listen to your answers, and I'm not afraid to tell you I need you today." The chorus then repeats, emphasizing again the need for guidance and light.
The final verse brings the plea full circle, with the singer acknowledging that he may become lost or tired or lose his way again in the future. He asks for guidance in those moments, and begs the listener to "Don't save it for another day, hey." Overall, the lyrics of "Light My Way" speak to the universal human experience of needing help and guidance, and the vulnerability and bravery required to ask for it.
