It consisted of Soundgarden frontman and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell and the former instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine: Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass and backing vocals) and Brad Wilk (drums).

Audioslave released three successful albums, received three Grammy nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Cornell issued a statement in February 2007 that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences." As the other three members were busy with the Rage Against the Machine reunion, and Morello and Cornell had each released solo albums in 2007, Audioslave was officially disbanded.

Chris has an incredible range. He can also go full Rob Halford with high octave screams as heard in Beyond the Wheel. And have incredible rasp and texture as you might hear in Slaves and Bulldozers. Chris is the lead singer for Audioslave and Temple of the dog also along with his many solo projects. You should listen to When I'm Down and his cover of Nothing Compares 2U. In 1994, during the Superunknown tour, Chris Cornell injured his voice and Soundgarden had to cancel their tour for the first time. I believe this was recorded in 1995 after he came back from his vocal injury. The cause was massive over-singing from a long worldwide tour. It changed the quality in his voice a bit. There are pro shots of Soundgarden during the 1994 tour. Chris was in a league of his own, but despite near perfect technique, singing like this too much will hurt you over time no matter what if you don't give yourself enough rest.

This is actually live, it was filmed and recorded in a studio for the single release, which is why it sounds so good! Those single shots of Chris singing to the camera or from below were done later I'm guessing, so they're not from the actual recorded performance (there's no mic in a lot of them) but who knows, being in that environment maybe helped him get in the zone, or maybe they actually did perform a take while those shots were being done! It's nice when people who know about this stuff get to have a good look at the technique that's going on

Yeah it's a different performance - the guitars aren't as distorted (and like the guy above says, not given the usual multitrack and overdub treatment) but that suits what Chris is doing, which is going between very subdued and very intense, way more than on the album take. That last "cuz I fell on" sounds mumbled and almost apologetic after the screaming that came before it - so having the guitars be a little more laid back helps with that. Also lets the drums be powerful as hell! Them hi-hats are ~crisp~

Great reaction! You will not be disappointed with Temple of the Dog! From the first notes of "Hunger Strike", I was hooked. Then, the vocals came in, and the astonishment came. Tears welledup many times throughout the song. The personal connection of the vocalists, and musicians, to the song come through so amazingly, but painfully. It's an experience you don't want to pass up, but I know that I need to be prepared for, now. As a singer, the vocal dynamics are what keep me coming back to Temple of the Dog. I was extremely fortunate to have a friend that received solo Chris Cornell tickets as a gift three times. Two were his bare bones shows, where it was just him and a type of portable phonograph that our music teachers used in the 70s. It was spellbinding! We got to hear personal interactions he had, and he showed that while he loved singing and playing guitar, he was uncomfortable with the reactions to his vocal abilities. He was just a regular guy who was capable of vocal gymnastics that thrilled, and awed the world. He is greatly missed. 💔🤘

What a talent. Try the acoustic version of "Like a Stone" he did for "unplugged". A little later in his career. The way he sang it is incredible and you can watch him the whole time.

Read somewhere that Axl Rose said that Chris was his favorite vocalist. And this was before Soundgarden was a mainstream name. As a GNR fan back in the day, I had to find out who he was. He didn't disappoint. Louder than Love is still my favorite album by Soundgarden. His work on Temple of the Dog (tribute to Andrew Wood with Mother Love Bone) was outstanding. Though I enjoy this song, its definitely not his best effort. Not by a long shot. Hands all Over, Loud Love. his cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U, Times of Trouble and Four Walled World (from TotD), and many others. Sadly, he apparently wasn't happy on this plane. He is missed.

Edit: Also, his cover of Michael Jackson Billy Jean is mezmerizing.

Wow! I really enjoyed your commentary on this one, Bethany. Soundgarden was my favorite grunge band, and Chris Cornell's voice was a big part of it. His ice & fire style was perfect for their songs. I can't wait to see what's next! You should also check out their song Black Hole Sun.

I loved this. I would love to see you do more stuff from Soundgarden. Chris was so unique and this was just the tip of the iceberg. You should do Like Suicide, or My Wave, or Outshined, or Searching With my Good Eye Closed... His voice is just amazing. Then, you should listen to Ty Cobb, the lyrics... You probably couldn't do a video with, but the vocals on it after those will surprise you.

Thanks, never get tired of listening to CC. Also you said his voice sounds "grungy" as you put it, yes miss, Chris is indeed the FATHER of grunge for good reason. And that smooth tone you can't quite put a finger on? I know that other artist have their own way of doing it but there is no other like the legend that is Cornell. If you haven't heard it yet, I recommend "loud love" I'm not sure if it's Soundgarden or audioslave though. Have a great day 😄

My guess is "people" recommended you first try Hunger Strike (the "duet"). My favorite Temple of the Dog song is; Say Hello 2 Heaven. It's a tribute to his friend and singer of Mother Love Bone; Andy Wood.

Ooh so glad I caught this today! Love that u said gentle❤ he has a very bluesy sound like in my fave live performance of anyone ever, his solo song When I’m Down live at the Troubadour. Just him and a piano player and he hits so many amazing bluesy notes and the range is amazing and the lyrics r deep! Every Chris fan will tell u it’s a must listen!!I😊

7:30 I think this is at least partially live, because it differs from the recorded version on the Superunknown album. Chris and Soundgarden are heroes who paved the way for many artists. Great reaction and analysis, thank you

One of the greatest singers of all-time. Such power, beauty and longing that he made you feel what he felt. Gone way too soon, no one sings like you any more. RIP Side note: Funny you should mention Eddie Vedder- They sang together in Chris's previous band, Temple of the Dog.
