Audioslave released three successful albums, received three Grammy nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Cornell issued a statement in February 2007 that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences." As the other three members were busy with the Rage Against the Machine reunion, and Morello and Cornell had each released solo albums in 2007, Audioslave was officially disbanded.

When I hated everything
Born too young, top of my lungs
Sitting on the bottom rung
Took advice from the wrong shoulder
Took a lot of everything
I've decided to make it alright with my
Halo, with me underneath
Halo, I'm reborn
I can do no wrong
Black and blue, suffering fools
By the age of seventeen
Low and high, just one more time
Felt like an eternity
Right or wrong, never too strong
Friends became my enemies
God forsaken but never too late with my
Halo, I'm complete
Halo, with me underneath
Halo, I'm reborn
I can do no wrong
Oh oh
You'll never change me
You'll never change me (you'll stay the same)
Halo, I'm complete
Halo, with me underneath
Halo, I'm reborn
How can you know?
Halo, I'm complete
Halo, with me underneath
Halo, I'm reborn
I can do no wrong
The lyrics to Audioslave's song The Worm suggest an introspective exploration of the singer's personal struggles, from a time when they "hated everything" to their eventual rebirth and completion. The opening lines suggest a sense of resentment and dissatisfaction with the world, likely born of youth and inexperience. The lyrics "Took advice from the wrong shoulder / Took a lot of everything" indicate a sense of misguided choices and perhaps even substance abuse.
The chorus, which repeats the word "Halo," suggests a newfound sense of clarity and completeness. It is interesting to note the use of religious imagery, as a halo is typically associated with divinity and holiness. The singer may be experiencing a personal epiphany that is akin to a spiritual awakening. The lyrics "I can do no wrong" further express a sense of confidence and empowerment in the singer's newfound state of being.
The second verse continues to explore the singer's struggles, including feelings of isolation and betrayal by former friends. The lyrics "Never too strong / Friends became my enemies" suggest a sense of vulnerability and perhaps even a lack of self-worth. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the message of personal transformation and rebirth, with the singer seemingly overcoming their past struggles to emerge as a more complete and self-assured individual.
Overall, The Worm's lyrics are cryptic and open to interpretation, but they seem to suggest a journey of personal growth and the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
