Auf der Maur became friends with Billy Corgan after apologizing for a friend who threw a beer bottle at him during one of The Smashing Pumpkins' Canadian shows. Her band, Tinker, opened for The Smashing Pumpkins in Montréal in 1993. In 1994, when Hole was in need of a new bassist following the death of Kristen Pfaff, Corgan recommended Auf der Maur to Courtney Love. Auf der Maur originally turned down the job but reconsidered on advice from her father. She joined Hole two weeks before the band's appearance at the Reading Festival, and recorded the band's third album Celebrity Skin. She left on October 20, 1999 after the band's tours in promotion of the album.
In 1999, she joined The Smashing Pumpkins after the departure of D'arcy Wretzky, and remained with the band until they disbanded in 2000. After this, she collaborated with a number of artists. In 2001, she sang on Rufus Wainwright's album, Poses. In 2002, she sang with Nicola Sirkis on the French band Indochine's song "Le Grand Secret."
In 2004, she released her debut album, Auf der Maur. The singles "Followed the Waves", "Real A Lie" and "Taste You" garnered significant airplay on modern rock radio. Six years later, she released her long-awaited follow-up, Out of Our Minds, in 2010, which featured a more obscure approach to songwriting and featured an appearance from Glenn Danzig.
Followed the Waves

Am I hangin' around again?
Can't you see?
That my heart lies, my heart lies to you
I cannot see it through
But my heart lies to you
You'll never have me true
(I lie)
Please don't, please don't make amends
(Please don't, please don't make amends)
See me, see me slip again
(See me, see me slip again)
Break my heart
The cards of fate
Seal the deal
My heart lies, my heart lies to you
I followed the waves to you,
I cannot see it through
But my heart lies to you
You'll never have me true
I followed the waves to you,
I cannot see it through
But my heart lies to you
I'll never stay with you
I followed the waves to you,
I cannot see it through
But my heart lies to you
You'll Never have me true
Between my fire sighs and my burning eyes
My heart burns wildly in his eyes
He's just a drunken, gambling man
Dealing with the hand of desire's thing
I'm gonna shuffle his deck clean
I'm gonna shuffle his deck clean
The song "Followed the Waves" by Auf Der Maur is about a love that is not meant to be. The lyrics indicate that the singer is sneaking around and hanging out with someone even though she knows it's not right, as her heart belongs to someone else. She followed the waves to be with this person, but she knows deep down that it won't end well. She is warning her lover that he'll never have her true because her heart lies with someone else.
The verses express the singer's confusion and the conflict between her feelings and her sense of duty. She can't help but follow her heart, but she also can't ignore the fact that her actions are hurting someone else. The chorus repeats the idea that her heart belongs to someone else, and even though she followed the waves to her current lover, her feelings won't change. The final verse seems to suggest that the singer is confronting the man who is tempting her away from her true love, and even though she knows she shouldn't be with him, she wants to "shuffle his deck clean" and rid herself of the temptation for good.
Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the struggle between desire and responsibility in matters of the heart. It portrays the complex emotions and choices that people face when they find themselves pulled in different directions by their feelings.

Criminally underrated album.

+bunnyhead71 The album just got released in the wrong years, when teens used to listen Kayne Pest and actual thugs and lame POP artists of today take over radio stations. In the 1990 years her album would beat Hole band and Courtney Love. But grungers of the 1990 years got older and most of them don t even try to listen new songs because 99% of new songs of today suck ass. Beck won a grammy for the best album of the year in 2015 and Kayne Pest had to diss him , even BeyWHOREsey supported Kayne Pest.... the actual music industry is actually dead for people dislike lame thug life.
@Hellion73
+Silent Scott Wolf Yep, that's why she quits the music inds. Even so, the whole album was great back then...

Elements of grunge and hard rock with a soft refinement and thoughtful gentle energy juxtaposed with it. She is so wonderful and overrated. The best part of Hole. The real talent.

I heard this song a couple of times on the radio after it had been released and immediately fell in love with it. Unfortunately they never announced her name, so I had no clue who sang this great song. Quite a few years later I vaguely remembered this song and googled female musicians. Eventually I found a site with an alphabetical listing of female artists and was prepared to spend hours or even days finding the performer of this song. Luckily Melissa was listed as Auf Der Maur and very soon I had found my quest. I joyfully turned up the volume and tears welled my eyes. I felt like the happiest and luckiest man on earth.
