Auf der Maur became friends with Billy Corgan after apologizing for a friend who threw a beer bottle at him during one of The Smashing Pumpkins' Canadian shows. Her band, Tinker, opened for The Smashing Pumpkins in Montréal in 1993. In 1994, when Hole was in need of a new bassist following the death of Kristen Pfaff, Corgan recommended Auf der Maur to Courtney Love. Auf der Maur originally turned down the job but reconsidered on advice from her father. She joined Hole two weeks before the band's appearance at the Reading Festival, and recorded the band's third album Celebrity Skin. She left on October 20, 1999 after the band's tours in promotion of the album.
In 1999, she joined The Smashing Pumpkins after the departure of D'arcy Wretzky, and remained with the band until they disbanded in 2000. After this, she collaborated with a number of artists. In 2001, she sang on Rufus Wainwright's album, Poses. In 2002, she sang with Nicola Sirkis on the French band Indochine's song "Le Grand Secret."
In 2004, she released her debut album, Auf der Maur. The singles "Followed the Waves", "Real A Lie" and "Taste You" garnered significant airplay on modern rock radio. Six years later, she released her long-awaited follow-up, Out of Our Minds, in 2010, which featured a more obscure approach to songwriting and featured an appearance from Glenn Danzig.
Real A Lie

So alone I try to find the lie,
That lies beneath you, I try
Like a wave, I'm self-acclaimed
Real a lie, you're truly mine
I am that kind, living blind
Real a lie, I am that kind
Living blind, for a lie
Real a lie, you're truly mine
I am that kind, living blind
Real a lie, I am that kind
Living blind, for a lie
Behind closed doors your folded blind,
You're truly mine, from behind
Closed doors you meet me,
Like a wave, I'm self-acclaimed
Real a lie, you're truly mine..
Real a lie, you're truly mine
I am that kind, living blind
Real a lie, I am that kind
Living blind, for a lie
Real a lie, you're truly mine
I am that kind, living blind
Real a lie, I am that kind
Living blind, for a lie
Deep and so far, low down
Growing green, far above the waves
Got a lie, you and I
Wave, wave, wave
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo (4x)
Real a lie, you're truly mine
I am that kind, living blind
Real a lie, I am that kind
Living blind, for a lie
For a lie..
The lyrics to "Real A Lie" by Auf Der Maur are enigmatic and leave room for interpretation. The singer is expressing a sense of being free, aroused, and self-proclaimed, yet also alone and trying to find the underlying lie within someone. The repetition of the phrase "real a lie" suggests a sense of disillusionment or perhaps a fear of authenticity. The singer seems to be living blind for this lie, finding comfort in it, but also recognizing the potential harm in doing so.
The line "behind closed doors your folded blind, you're truly mine, from behind" could suggest a secretive or potentially harmful relationship dynamic, with one person controlling the other. The repetition of the phrase "like a wave" throughout the song could symbolize the ups and downs of this relationship, as well as the singer's own fluctuating emotions and sense of identity.
Overall, the lyrics to "Real A Lie" convey a sense of complexity and contradiction in relationships, as well as the potential danger in clinging to a lie for comfort.

It's a shame she doesn't get the recognition she deserves. I for one think she's the best female music artist I've listened to in the last 10 years. But that's my opinion.

And still didn't
@sweetcell8767
Dude, she gets plenty of recognition. More importantly she’s been lucky enough to be admired by her fellow successful artists. She was siphoned into 2 very successful bands without any intention of being in either one. She says this herself. So she’s had a great run.

@@sweetcell8767Quite right, very well said. She's actually been very lucky, there are thousands of amazing bass players who didn't get the chances that she got. I'm not hating on her, I just find it odd when people start talking about lack of recognition when she's had more than her fair share.
@Proggydan
I had the chance to see her performing live, including this one. It was just a blissful moment.
@QuarterSooner
The one time I had a chance to see her, I had a gig of my own that night :( I thought she might tour again a few years after but I think she's pretty much hung up her bass now. I'm devastated.
