Yup. There’s something about the way the low notes move in the reversed one that’s more emotional, plus the fact that the melody rises instead of descends makes it even more epic.

This intro solidified my love for Metallica. I got into the band backwards, starting with the black album about a year after it came out, then going back through their releases in reverse order. ...And Justice For All is just solid end to end, despite the bass being buried in the mix.

The forward version is what would have been on the album if Cliff was alive, as Jason was the one who suggested to reverse it. It's a much more positive, powerful-sounding melody than the dark and emotional intro on the real album. That's a perfect microcosm for how the album might have sounded with Cliff still in the band, since his death inspired a lot of the darkness and grief you can hear on Justice. In this way the forward intro gives us a taste of that alternate reality where the crash never happened.

It's actually not the only with audible bas, there's a second moment in O Live is to Die, in the interlude. Those cello like parts are actually bass with a volume pedal (when Rob played it live, he used the volume knob of his bass instead of the pedal)

@HARRY CHILDS yeah people say it's the rhythm guitar producing the bass, because the "isolated" guitar tracks sounds like they have a lot of bass, but this is more the effect of not being able to separate out all the guitar sounds properly trying to digitally isolate them out. The Masters were wrecked a long time ago. So essentially you are hearing Jason's bass guitar, but you aren't hearing it clearly defined like on the other albums.

That intro still gives me goosebumps, i didn't get into Metallica until the black album came out. Once i heard it i began seeking out the older stuff, i remember getting a cassette of and justice for all and feeling the goosebumps during that intro, when the riff takes over i just sat there like wow!

Do you know what it feels like to hear that intro for years and always wondering what guitar sorcery they used to make those notes so perfect harmonizing and long without plectrum click, to then figure out after years that the intro was in fact reversed?

I was there. It was in mixing stage. We were actually running the tape back to mix it and you could sort of hear it when it was being rewound. Jason was in the next room and came in laughing. He was like, "Holy shit" We stumbled on to an accident. Jason wasn't usually there for mixing. Just Lars and James. It was also going to go straight in to the song with everyone, but it was thought to run the rhythm by itself. So they went in and just re-recorded the very beginning, and through a few edits, you have what it's known as today. Cheers! 🍻

I always wondered how this was written. I remember nerding out over it when I was first learning guitar and thought that was a big thing that made metallica for me was this harmony laced intros and interludes. It was this perfect way of setting up what was about to happen whether it be like here the main riff to blackened or a pre solo type of thing.

The violence of the blast when the drums set in is so heavy that you can hear at this side of the cut off...It disstorts the sound at this end. This simply couldn't be possible, but it is .
It blasts back in time. It's like a black hole of sound.

The tone is only like that because the parts are recorded and layered literally like 50 times there is no way to really get a tone that PHAT in RL (like guitar out a case plugged into an amp even the same guitar and same amp same settings would sound thin ASF without the dozens of dubs)

I feel like more bands should experiment with reversing some of their music. The attack coming at the end instead of the start gives it such a unique sound. Only problem is playing it live, but idk, the blackened intro is just so iconic because they reversed it. More bands should throw it in there.
