Stars and Boulevards
Augustana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wait, dear
White horse is walking down my
Street here
Your words are creeping at my feet
I fear
That sunrise will come too soon and you'll
Disappear
To the haze of a city and yourself
Oh no

Look out
They're coming after us with big guns
They're only going to tell you all the bad things I've done
Even if the words they say aren't true
They've won
Now I'm left here dying in the sun

Whoa
Seem like I'm only coming
Seem like I'm never coming
Seem like in my eyes I'm at
I bet all the stars and boulevards
Aren't close enough to you

Late nights
Won't do me justice
When I drink I
Just get so damn depressed
And it's, it's not like
I ain't trying to get over you
It's just hard to look at all the seasons pass me all the time
And I said

Whoa
Seem like I'm only coming
Seem like I'm never coming
Seem like in my eyes I'm at
I bet all the stars and boulevards
Aren't close enough to you

One last
Phone call from you
It wouldn't hurt much
I just like to hear your voice
And pretend to touch
Any inch of you that hasn't said it all or read it all
I sung my life away
And I say

Whoa
Seem like I'm only coming
Seem like I'm never coming
Seem like in my eyes I'm at
All the stars and boulevards
Aren't close enough to you (seem like I'm only coming)
All the stars and boulevards
Aren't close enough to you (seem like I'm never coming)
All the stars and boulevards
Aren't close enough to you (seem like I'm only coming)

All the stars and boulevards
Aren't close enough to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Augustana's song "Stars and Boulevards" convey a sense of longing for someone who has left and the difficulties of trying to move on. The first verse describes the fear of losing someone, with the line "That sunrise will come too soon and you'll disappear to the haze of a city and yourself." The singer sees himself as being left behind, unable to keep up with the pace of life in the city. The second verse takes on a more dramatic tone, with the singer feeling like he is under attack from people who would seek to tear him down. The line "They're coming after us with big guns, they're only going to tell you all the bad things I've done" suggests that he is being targeted unfairly, but is powerless to stop it.

In the chorus, the singer expresses his desire to be close to the person he has lost. The line "I bet all the stars and boulevards aren't close enough to you" suggests that no matter where he goes or what he does, he will never be able to feel truly connected to this person again. In the third verse, the singer reveals that he is struggling with alcoholism and depression as a way of coping with his loss. Despite this, he remains hopeful that one day the person he has lost will call him and everything can be made right again.

Overall, "Stars and Boulevards" is a melancholy and introspective song about the pain of losing someone and the difficulties of trying to move on. It speaks to the universal human experience of heartbreak and the desire to be close to those we love, even when circumstances seem to conspire against us.

Augustana was my first favorite band.

MySpace days...I was 10 or 11

And I heard "Boston"

Then listened to this album.

Now I'm 27 and have always listened to this song periodically all these years

And each time this song especially gets more scarily relatable.

This song...takes me back to a time where I was in love with a man that I was certain would never love me back...imagine my shock when he came by to borrow a book, and this song was on...we talked about this song for over 4 hours...and then he told me he'd always loved me....but life had pulled us apart....and how if he had a fighting chance, he'd be with me forever.....3 years later, we're married and making our own Stars and Boulevards....thank you Augustana for bringing 2 imperfectly perfect for the other together!

I once described this song as "if chords could define me, this would be everything my soul was". I'd still say that. This melody is pure.

I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I was 17. It was calming.
I was in the midst of getting caught up in my future, parties, road trips and other things.
It was different than the 70s, 80s, 90s rock/metal I was into at the time.

“Late nights, won’t do me justice Cause when I drink I, just get soo damned depressed and it’s, it’s not like, I ain’t tryin to get over you it’s just hard to look at all the seasons pass me over to”

Such a hard look at reality at 26.
Such a good and overlooked song.
