Wasteland
Augustana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now I'm sitting on a plane
Lonely flight back to L.A.
Don't come back with me
So I'll drink myself to sleep
Cut my skin until I bleed
Hold my breath all the night

'Cause it's 5 o'clock
The hour stops the sunlight
And the buildings shade the masquerade and kill time

Hear the sound
She was naked on the ground
Til I whispered in her ear
Come away, watch the dawn break through the day
'Til the sun is underneath

'Cause it's 5 o'clock
The hour stops the sunlight
And the buildings shade the masquerade and kill time
Here we're nothing more than fools and whores and sad highs
Through the summer sand, we're living in
We're living in the wasteland

It's a wasteland
It's a wasteland
It's a wasteland for me
And we're nothing more than fools and whores and sad highs
Through the summer sand, we're living in
We're living in a wasteland

Here we're nothing more than fools and whores and sad highs
Through the summer sand, we're living in
We're living in a wasteland

It's a wasteland
It's a wasteland

It's a wasteland for me
For me

Overall Meaning

The first few lines of Augustana's "Wasteland" provide an illustration of loneliness and despair as the persona is on a lonely flight back to LA, with no one to keep him company. He had probably hoped that someone would join him on his trip, but now with no one to keep him company, he resorts to drinking himself to sleep to cushion the impact of loneliness. The loneliness is further reinforced as he contemplates inflicting pain on himself by cutting his skin until he bleeds and holding his breath all night. The lyrics try to portray an individual haunted by the demons of loneliness, isolation, and despair.

The song progresses to explore the wasteland that has become his life. The persona finds himself in a situation that is nothing more than a mirage, a masquerade that kills time. The hour has stopped the sunlight, and the buildings are shading the masquerade, which is a metaphor for the emptiness of the persona's life. The persona gets a momentary reprieve when he hears a sound and finds a naked woman on the ground. With hope lurking around the corner, he whispers in her ear and invites her to come with him to watch the dawn break through the day until the sun is underneath. However, the fleeting moment of hope is eclipsed by the realization that they are living in a wasteland, where they are nothing more than fools, whores, and sad highs.
