Guts
Augustine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Counting ticks from the clock
It's a morning too modest

She's finding parts of my face
Funny looking and anxious

It's a cruel world before the eyes of these posh innocents
I would use her to stay alive if the ground were to bend

And baby pulls her hair for a Vicodin
She falls flat on the bed again
Mutters something about the end
While covering her eyes with both her hands

I on the other hand
I feel fine with the way I am
I awoke to her elegance
I've figured out a way to make amends

"Could you cut open all of my chest
I'm already too restless

Of course I'm feeling depressed
Find a way we could use it"

It's a cruel world before the eyes of these posh innocents
I would use her to stay alive if the ground were to bend

And baby pulls her hair for a Vicodin
She falls flat on the bed again
Mutters something about the end
While covering her eyes with both her hands

I on the other hand
I feel fine with the way I am
I awoke to her elegance
I've figured out a way to make amends

My my my
We're pretenders
We're beaming
We're the signs of our time
My my
Oh whatever

And baby pulls her hair for a Vicodin
She falls flat on the bed again
Mutters something about the end
While covering her eyes with both her hands

I on the other hand
I feel fine with the way I am

I awoke to her elegance
I've figured out a way to make amends

Overall Meaning

In Augustine's song "Guts," the singer presents a juxtaposition of emotions and attitudes towards life. The first verse describes the singer waking up in the morning, but rather than feeling refreshed and energized, he appears anxious and self-conscious. He seems to be hyper-aware of his appearance as he says, "She's finding parts of my face / Funny looking and anxious." This sense of unease is exacerbated by the knowledge that the world can be both cruel and innocent at the same time. The second verse tells a story of a woman who is struggling with addiction, as she resorts to pulling her hair for a Vicodin. While she falls apart, the singer seems to remain unruffled and content with the way he is.

Later in the song, the singer alludes to a desire for a sort of figurative surgery. He asks, "Could you cut open all of my chest / I'm already too restless" which suggests a need for a deeper, emotional shift. Despite his self-awareness, the singer still maintains a certain optimism in his conclusion, "I've figured out a way to make amends." The song seems to comment on the performative aspects of life, as people might present themselves as seemingly perfect and happy on the surface, but are broken and struggling underneath.

This is one of the finest songs I've ever heard. And believe me, I have heard a lot. From pop to metal to jazz to every genre you can name.
Compare them all, and this song sits comfortably in my top 20 of all time.

This is just amazing.

In ever song, there are some parts that you love, and some parts that are okay, but they make you wait for the good part to start.

This song though, is one of those rare ones where it is just brilliant from start to end.

Just absolutely love it.
