The Harmonic Dread - Forget his frail looks, during his lifetime this brother was a huge and potent contributor to the trajectory of roots reggae as a musical art form. Horace Swaby (a.k.a. Augustus Pablo) was a musical powerhouse and a genuine legend in the roots reggae genre. If Yabby You was the Jesus Dread then as far as I am concerned, this man ought to be remembered as the Harmonic Dread. Not just because he pioneered the use of the Harmonica as a leading instrument in roots reggae but also because he created exquisitely melodious and harmonic tunes.
Both the Jesus Dread (Yabby You), and the Harmonic Dread (Augustus Pablo) were influential and highly respected men among their roots reggae peers for their individual lifetime musical achievements and contributions to the development of the genre as a serious performance art form. Sadly, both men like many other giants in roots music, died too early when their further contributions were sorely needed. Who knows what artistic heights, roots reggae music would have attained if these musically gifted men had lived longer. It is sad that gifted artists like Augustus Pablo, Yabby You, King Tubby, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Barry Brown, I-Roy, Prince Far I, Jacob Miller, Hugh Mundell etc. etc. died too early, while wicked and not so useful people linger on. This is a sampler of the Harmonic Dread’s musical prowess which has an identical ‘riddim’ as his ‘555 Crown Street.’

Everything is blamed on the devil. Well this one is a writer's Devil. The Harmonic Dread's defining instrument was the melodica or key-harmonica. The melodica is a form of harmonica equipped with keyboards.
