′Cause we've been driving so long
I can′t remember how we got here
Or how we survived so long
I'm trying to run from our pride
At least set fire to my atmosphere
And I remember how I spent the 23rd
Feeling six feet under when I'm 30, 000 feat in the air
Chasing that sundown
So far east I′m westbound
Feeling like the edge of the world is near

But you′ll feel better when you wake up
Swear to God I'll make up
Everything and more when I get back someday
This is more than just a phase, love
Shooting stars all break up
And even though it seems like half the world away
Things will be better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I can fly you out this place someday
Chasing dreams like I′m on novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

Stay you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
And they mean nothing to me
So stay you′re not what you're hearing
′Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said youre one in a million anyway?

'Cause you see only what you want to
Your tunnel vision haunts you
And you can′t see what′s wrong with you
When you keep sleeping through the PM
Eyes wide open when you're dreaming
You′re sleepwalking
Just keep talking
Maybe you can talk your way out of this deep end
No b plan in your system
Just tell me what you'r thinking
I′m scared that you might fall

But you're not
But you′re not...

And you'll feel better when you wake up
Taking off your make up
Sun always seems to wash our fears away
And it's always shining somewhere
I just gotta get there
And even though it seems like half the world away
Things are better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I can fly you out this place some day
Chasing dreams like I′m on novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

Stay you′re not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
When they mean nothing to me
So stay you're not what you′re hearing
Cos I've been watching you changing
And who said you′re one in a million?

You're so much better than that
You′re so much better than that
You're so much better than that

Stay you're not what you′re hearing
Cos I′ve been watching you changing

And who said youre one in a million
Anyway?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Augxst's song Eden represent the feelings of a person who has been on a long journey, both physically and emotionally. They are weary and lost and have been running away from something. The lyrics depict how the person feels like they have been driving for so long they cannot remember how they got to the present state. They admit to feeling lost and are trying to escape their own pride. The line "At least set fire to my atmosphere" shows that the person is willing to destroy everything in their life, including their own self-image, to find clarity.

The lyrics then transition to a reflection of a past birthday when the person was feeling low, despite being on an airplane climbing to higher altitudes. The person is chasing the sun and believes that they are on the edge of the earth but feels better, knowing that someday they can come back to the person they love, and things will be better. The dreams of flying to America paint the picture of a place of hope and opportunity, where the streets are gold. The pre-chorus suggests that even though the distance between the person and their loved one is vast, things will get better.

The chorus repeats that staying is the best option for the person as their loved one assures them that they are where they need to be. The person feels like they are changing, but their loved one's words still hold just as much meaning. The second verse carries the same theme but alludes to the person who sleeps through their problems and how the person is scared that they may fall. The lyrics conclude with the idea that the person is better than their perceived value of "one in a million."

@Shades7138

For me this song is all about depression, and coping with depression whilst being in a relationship. The lyrics "So stay, you're not what you're hearing Cause I've been watching you changing" are so powerful and a perfect metaphor for constantly hearing depressive thoughts in your head about not being good enough, and this can be for literally anything, so powerful and debilitating depression can be; but to the other, normal person in the relationship, it is clear that the depressed is getting better, or things were never even bad in the first place, but it never seems that way to the depressed, hence the repeats of "things are better in America" being just a metaphor for how the grass is always greener on the other side; as well as "the sun is always shining somewhere, I just gotta get there" meaning things always seem better at another time, another place, yet never here, and now. There is always something imperfect in the eyes of the depressed, a nagging shade dragging down their moods and they spend their lives trying to reach that special other place, where "the streets are made out of gold". This never happens though, because they cannot escape their minds.

The constant need to escape, to hide, and disconnect from the world is perhaps the most damaging aspect that a depressed person brings to a relationship.
"Stay, you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them?
When they mean nothing to me?"
This is from the point of view of the normal person in the relationship, who is bewildered by their partner's need to run and hide instead of dealing with their problems, but the disconnect between the two individuals' mindsets mean it is extremely difficult, if not impossible for the depressed to be understood. You don't truly understand how they feel unless you have been through it yourself. "Maybe I can fly you out this place someday" is the desire of the depressed to make things better for the both of them, to improve his/her condition so that it is no longer the thorn in the side; yet note how the line starts with the word "maybe", which is yet another sad reality that the depressed cannot ever promise anything, because they know, that at any time their condition will kick in, forcing them to abandon their plans, commitments and all responsibilities. This ties in perfectly with "And why your words gotta mean so much to them?
When they mean nothing to me" that the words of a depressed man, mean absolutely nothing. Presenting a facade of reliability at the start "to them" is just that, something that will be dropped once the depressed gets to know someone well and is comfortable enough to drop their shields, exposing their ugly side beneath.

A haunting, yet beautiful song in my opinion, with sad, meaningful lyrics which hide nothing.
"And you'll feel better when you wake up
Swear to god I'll make up
Everything or more when I get back someday"
The relationship is doomed to failure, and perhaps should never have started. The song ends with the couple separated, with no hope of ever re conciliating. "Swear to god" and "Everything or more when I get back someday" is a bunch of empty promises, as the depressed has no idea when, or even if they will return.
"Looking back I almost thought I heard you say
You're so much better than that".
The constant need for approval and encouragement that the depressed thirsts for drains the energies of those closest to them; in this case it is the normal person in the relationship. They started off with good intentions, helping the depressed in whatever way they can, endlessly and selflessly giving help and encouragement; but it's not enough, it's never enough. Eventually the patience of the normal person wears thin, and they mentally check out. They have their own problems to deal with, their own lives that does not simply revolve around that of the depressed.

Notice how the depressed only ever says "I almost thought I heard you say", not "I heard you say". This confirms the above, that in the past, the normal person tried to help them, but in this last time of separation, they don't bother anymore.

@emilybarbosa6631

In April 2017 I knew Eden by this song. And I couldn't relate but I loved the feeling that music caused, I still do.

After a while, around 2017/2018 the songs became real. I always listen to Eden, an artist who accompanied me in different phases and has been accompanying me, always the same songs.

But never completely, sometimes I felt that when I died, they would remember me when listening to Eden, especially drugs, I think they still will. I no longer have the suicidal thoughts I used to, although some things have happened. I'm afraid that, in this new stage of my life, the part where he talks about the fall is really becoming real and maybe I'll lose the one I love.

Maybe it's a hasty comment but seeing the way he (who I love) is acting, it's been killing me little by little and I can't say much. Maybe my happiness is always fleeting and not for me.

But things will get better when I wake up. Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow or a week from now. But first I need to sleep.

And sleeping has not been easy.

Lyrics [ From Genius ]
[Verse 1]
'Cause we've been driving so long
I can't remember how we got here
Or how we survived so long
Out trying to run from our pride
'Till you set fire to my atmosphere
And I remember how I spent the twenty-third
Feeling six feet under
When I'm thirty-thousand feet in the air
Chasing that sundown
So far east I'm westbound
Feeling like the edge of this world is near

[Pre-Chorus]
But you'll feel better when you wake up
Swear to god I'll make up
Everything and more when I get back someday
This is more than just a phase, love
Shooting stars all break up
And even though it seems like half the world away
Things will be better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I could fly you out this place someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

[Chorus]
Stay, you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
And they mean nothing to me?
So stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million, anyway?

[Verse 2]
'Cause you see only what you want to
Your tunnel vision owns you
And you can't see what's wrong
When you keep sleeping through the PM
Eyes wide open when you're dreaming
You’re sleepwalking, just keep talking
Maybe you can talk your way out of this deep end
No B-plan in your system
Just tell me what you're thinking
I'm scared that you might fall
But you're not
But you're not

[Pre-Chorus]
And you'll feel better when you wake up
Taking off your makeup
Sun always seems to wash our fears away
And it's always shining somewhere
I just gotta get there
And even though it seems like half the world away
Things are better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I could fly you out this place someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

[Chorus]
Stay, you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
And they mean nothing to me?
So stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million?

[Bridge]
You’re so much better than that
You’re so much better than that
You’re so much better than that
You’re so much better than that
Stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million anyway?

[Outro]
And you'll feel better when you wake up
Swear to God, I'll make up
Everything and more when I get back someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say:
"You're so much better than that"

Feeling six feet under
When I'm 30,000 feet in the air
Chasing that sundown
So far east I'm westbound
Feeling like the edge of this world is near

[Pre-Chorus]
But you'll feel better when you wake up
Swear to god I'll make up
Everything and more when I get back someday
This is more than just a phase, love
Shooting stars all break up
And even though it seems like half the world away
Things will be better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I could fly you out this place someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

[Chorus]
Stay, you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
And they mean nothing to me?
So stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million
Anyway?

[Verse 2]
'Cause you see only what you want to
Your tunnel vision owns you
And you can't see what's wrong
When you keep sleeping through the PM
Eyes wide open when you're dreaming
You’re sleepwalking, just keep talking
Maybe you can talk your way out of this deep end
No B-plan in your system
Just tell me what you're thinking
I'm scared that you might fall
But you're not
But you're not

[Pre-Chorus]
And you'll feel better when you wake up
Taking off your makeup
Sun always seems to wash our fears away
And it's always shining somewhere
I just gotta get there
And even though it seems like half the world away
Things are better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I could fly you out this place someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

[Chorus]
Stay, you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
And they mean nothing to me?
So stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million?

[Bridge]
You’re so much better than that
You’re so much better than that
You’re so much better than that
You’re so much better than that
Stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million anyway?

[Outro]
And you'll feel better when you wake up
Swear to God, I'll make up
Everything and more when I get back someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocaine
Screaming through your airwaves
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say
You're so much better than that

@m.a9066

I see it like this.

A foreign couple, recently married. Live in a not-so-economically-advanced country in a small house.

Two years into this relationship, the man has a dream to move to America. He wins a scholarship or whatever and gets enough money to move. He views their country as a 'dump' compared to America, and doesn't take pride in it at all. All his friends, his family, and even the neighbors congratulate him and tell him to do it. But the woman doesn't want to. Where he sees poor, filth, she sees culture, love, true smiles. Nothing fake, not like America.

Take note, many foreign people (before President Trump), thought America was a country of freedom, or prosperity. That's why it has so many immigrants. They saw it as a safe haven.

Small, late night fights start. In bed, he tells her, "But you'll feel better when you wake up, swear to God I'll make up, everything and more when I get back someday."

He was saying that he was going to go, no matter what. He just couldn't bear the thought of leaving her. He was trying to persuade her to come, but she stood her ground and refused.

This is more than just a phase, Love. Shooting stars all break up.

He felt like they're love was cracking. In this context, he referred to his lover as 'Love'.

He tries different tactics.

"And even though it seems like half the world away. Things will be better in America, heard the streets are gold there, maybe I can fly you out this place someday."

Once again, many foreign people used to think that America was a land of freedom, love, and fortune. That is not true.

Chasin' dreams like I'm on Novocaine. Screamin' through your airways.

He becomes so stressed, he starts doing drugs and taking alcohol just to clear his mind. On top of that, they start having debts, which piles onto even more stress. He does Novocaine, and chasing the dreams when he's passed out. This may also be a metaphor, where he's working so hard that he's gone impossibly crazy and stubborn wanting that one dream. I see it as both in the story.

She fights back.

"Stay, you're not gonna leave me. This place is right where you need to be."

She says it with the understanding that he wasn't ever going to leave her. She doesn't see what was in America that they couldn't achieve in their home country.

"And why you're words gotta mean so much to them?"

She knows that he's worrying about his appearance. His scholarship/money is all the rage in that particular town. Everyone's talking about how if they got it, they would automatically leave. He keep reassuring them that he would go, he just needs time to 'set things up'. But if he denies, he would get looked down upon and possibly lose all his close friends.

"When they mean nothing to me."

She doesn't care about America, or money, or fame or fortune. She just wants him. And his words and promises are beginning to mean nothing to her.

"So stay, you're not what you're hearing. 'Cause I've been watching you changing. And who said you were one in a million, anyway?"

She can see him changing. And who said he was one in a million? She certainly didn't.

"Cause you see only what you want to, your tunnel vision haunts you. And you can't see what's wrong."

They both tell each other this, because they both are too stubborn to look beyond their own reasoning.

"I'm scared that you might fall . . ."

She's scared that he'll fall in America.
He's scared that she'll fall by herself in their country.

He brings it up again at a party. After it, they start yelling in the car, her screaming that no one was going anywhere but him yelling back that it's only reasonable that they get out of this 'wasteland'. She gets offended and gives him the silent treatment.

And you'll feel better when you wake up, takin' off your make-up, sun always seems to wash our fears away.

He thought, looking at her while she took off her mask. Mask meaning facade of happiness and perfection.

And it's always shining somewhere, I just gotta get there, even though it feels like half the world away.

He knows that opportunity is in America, and he needs to get there, even if it is half the world away.

"Things are better in America."

Note how he went from 'will be' to 'are'. Now he's confident in his decision.

"You're so much better than that."

She's crying when she turns away from him, saying that. She sleeps on the couch that night.

Later, when he writes the song (Obv ofc it's not him, just for the story), he looks back and regrets his decision.

"Looking back, I almost thought I heard you say."

He left her. He left her to achieve a dream that wasn't ever going to be fulfilled without her consent.

And he terribly regrets his decision.

The first lines are what he wrote last.

"Cause we've been driving so long, I can't remember how we got here, or how we survived so long."

The 'drive' refers to their unconditional love for each other. He couldn't remember how they got to where they were now, separating ways as fate had chosen. Or how they survived each other for that long.

"I'm tryna run from our pride, till you stepped out of my atmosphere."

He talks about when he was still with her. Both of them were too proud to admit their own faults. And it wasn't until she "stepped out of his atmosphere", meaning she gave up on making him stay that he realized his decision was terrible.
