Their debut album, "Feel It Break" (May 2011, Domino), came after a long sequence of bands for Stelmanis, representing a near ten year musical progression performing as an artist, then fleshed-out by a full band. The album made into several year-end critics' lists; notably, both the Toronto Star and New York named it the best album of 2011, with the former calling it "an outright stunner". Stereogum named Austra a Band to Watch on March 14, 2011.
Their sophomore album "Olympia" was released on June 18, 2013, from which the first single Home was released on March 7, 2013.
In 2014, the band released their first EP, "Habitat EP".
More settled and dominant than ever, the band's sound represents Stelmanis' influences tightened into a shiny metal ball — pianos give way to keyboards as songs build and pull, their urgent, dark melodies arpeggiating through multiple synthesizers, wrapping themselves around Stelmanis' voice.

The Future
Austra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I know this
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
I look ahead
And I think about it
There's still a hole somebody
Needs to fill
I don't want to hear
That it's all my fault
The system won't help you when
Your money runs out
Realities beating
A grave has been dug
I'm looking for something
To rise up above
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
Future politics
Rest assured when I find it, I will take it
Rest assured, when I find it
I will take it
I'm not a coward, like them
Well, I got my money
I'm not a coward, like them
I don't need more money
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
Future politics
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way
Future politics
I'm never coming back here
There's only one way

Future politics
Austra’s Future Politics is a forewarning, a summary of our current existential crisis and a call to action towards building a better world that understands humanity’s interconnectivity. The song’s central theme is an exploration of the future of politics, what it could look like, and how it could be improved to serve the greater good. The verses of the song are sombre, with singer Katie Stelmanis hinting at the many reasons she wants out of her present state of affairs. She believes that there is still meaning in life; there is still a hole that someone needs to fill. She is tired of a reality that beats her down and is looking for something to rise above it all. The chorus is defiant, with Stelmanis sounding resolute in her resolution never to look back as she repeats the phrase “I'm never coming back here, there's only one way, future politics.”
The song’s optimism follows through in the second verse as the singer assures listeners that she will take a better path when she finds it. She is no coward and, unlike others, doesn’t require more money. She seeks more meaning and purpose in life, and the only way to achieve that is through a better future, through future politics. Future Politics, like many of Austra’s works, manages to capture the zeitgeist of our times with acute clarity. It’s a warning signal for what our future looks like and a call to action for radical change in every facet of our society.
