Their debut album, "Feel It Break" (May 2011, Domino), came after a long sequence of bands for Stelmanis, representing a near ten year musical progression performing as an artist, then fleshed-out by a full band. The album made into several year-end critics' lists; notably, both the Toronto Star and New York named it the best album of 2011, with the former calling it "an outright stunner". Stereogum named Austra a Band to Watch on March 14, 2011.
Their sophomore album "Olympia" was released on June 18, 2013, from which the first single Home was released on March 7, 2013.
In 2014, the band released their first EP, "Habitat EP".
More settled and dominant than ever, the band's sound represents Stelmanis' influences tightened into a shiny metal ball — pianos give way to keyboards as songs build and pull, their urgent, dark melodies arpeggiating through multiple synthesizers, wrapping themselves around Stelmanis' voice.

A coward's crown, please raise it high
I couldn't stop the warning
Split like a lip on top of mine
I wouldn't leave you in the sunlight
I wouldn't keep you in the sun's eye
If there's a meaning then I'll say it all again
You wouldn't call my name
It's never been the same
It's true, your eyes don't look at me
I couldn't tell you if I knew it or not
It could be islands
It could be better
It could be islands
It could be better
It could be islands
It could be better
It could be islands
It could be better
Who can have this feeling?
A coward's crown, please raise it high
I could hold off in the morning
Growing bolder in the night
I wouldn't leave you in the sunlight
I wouldn't keep you in the sun's eye
You wouldn't call my name
It's never been the same
It's true, your eyes don't look at me
I couldn't tell you if I knew it or not
It could be islands
It could be better
It could be islands
It could be better
It could be islands
It could be better
It could be islands
It could be better
"We Become" by Austra portrays a sense of desire and vulnerability towards someone. The lyrics suggest that the singer is willing to confront their emotions and not hide them anymore, depicted through the line, "I wouldn't hide this feeling." However, despite the willingness to confront their emotions, the singer is still hesitant to fully express themselves, represented by the line, "Keep up the lying if there's a meaning then I'll say it all again."
The chorus repeats the phrase "It could be islands/It could be better," which is open to interpretation. The phrase could refer to the possibility of escaping to a better place or achieving a better state of being. On the other hand, it could represent the ambiguity of the singer's feelings towards the person they desire. The line "It's true, your eyes don't look at me" indicates that the desired person may not reciprocate their feelings, leading to uncertainty and a desire for a better situation.
Throughout the lyrics, there is a juxtaposition of light and dark, with images of sunlight and the morning contrasted with the night and darkness. This could represent the contrasting emotions of hope and fear that the singer is grappling with while expressing their feelings.
