@Niklo74 The less than 1% was referring to a racial concept. It is not enough to divide people into races. To have differences certainly but not races.

In the Australian situation there was often also no common language source, indicating different origins. You are correct, over a long time-frame different languages can and would develop but one would expect some commonalities if that were the case.

No, there was never an idea to eliminate dark-skinned people from Australia. The records clearly show the British and then later Australian Governments worked very hard to keep them alive and to preserve them, even to the degree of trying to prevent intermarriage so they did not breed out.

If you are referring to the White Australia Policy in place for some decades, that never applied to Aborigines or even dark skins, but was in place because Australians in the 19th century, having had thousands of Chinese arrive on the goldfields, feared a massive influx from China and the loss of their Anglo-European culture to Asia.

As to racism, Australia has long had the highest and fastest rate of immigrant intermarriage of any nation and an even higher rate of Aboriginal intermarriage. Racists do not intermarry. Most Australians who register Aboriginal ancestry are more Anglo-European in ancestry than Aboriginal and very pale-skinned.

As to Aboriginal music, you need to remember that in 1788 there was not one group or a united people called Aborigines. There were 350-500 different groups, clans, tribes. Today with intermarriage there are thousands of variations on that theme. Until the British arrived most Aborigines were at war with each other just as they were in stone-age Europe long ago.

In terms of all humans alive today being descended from the same group of distant ancestors the work of John Hawks is useful:

@jimmy lonergan Firstly no culture has been maintained. No-one alive today, not even someone 100% Aboriginal from one of the 350 plus tribes or clans lives a life even remotely like that lived in 1788 or before.

All Aboriginal cultures in communities are now hybrids of Aboriginal/Anglo-European and in some parts of the country Asian cultures through inter-marriage.

Aborigines were NEVER one people. In 1788 there were around 350 different groups/clans, without a common language, descended from different waves of migration and colonisation. Today, with intermarriage, most are minimally Aboriginal in ancestry and have morphed into thousands of variations on the theme.

There is no genetic code for Aborigines because they were never one people. Some have DNA links to India because ancestors invaded from there; others to Polynesia; New Guinea; Asia and all to Africa because, like all humans, that is where we all began as Homo Sapiens.

Those with some Aboriginal ancestry and many of us have it, can and should value that ancestry but no more than the many other ancestral connections we have. Ancestry is personally interesting but that is all.

This is incorrect! Central Australian Aboriginal tribes have naturally occuring and sometimes sunbleached blonde hair. It wasnt bred in by the colonisers. You are wrong. How dare you speak such uneducated dross about my people.

Zuridey Dempsey

Exactly what I was saying tiddah people from out side of Australia or that invaded think they know better about our people we are our people, we are the ones that knows better than anyone else it’s just plain ignorants tiddah.

Ahmed Belton

On behalf of my people Nat Mac apologies. Alot of times arguing with brothers like this in HARLEM would lead to serious arguments.

Betty Ferguson

@Roslyn Ross 1 % differences seems to be a very big difference especially if a chimp DNA is 98.8% the same as our DNA. No I don't believe that we are all descent from the same relatively small group of Homo Sapiens but we all descent from a rather large group of Home Sapiens migrating in different waves out of Africa and mixing with people from older waves e.g. Neanderthals ... and people from newer waves. Australia is huge and of course there were different tribes and different languages and probably people were mixed even then from the different migration waves. Hmm, one people because of one language? That can be a definition. Unfortunately not all think or thought like that. I heard that there was long time the idea to "eliminate" the dark skinned people from Australia and make all Australian people white. Probably you know more than me about these problems. The good is, that today this ideas and plans are officially stopped but is it really in the hearts of all people or in the heart of the majority of white Australians? I hope the mind has changed by the majority. For racist people it does not matter whether people talk the same language and share the same roots/genetics. It is looked for the smallest piece of difference to discreminate others and a differenct skin colour is more than enough. Even with the same skin colour racism does not vanish. Recently I looked for "australian aboriginal music" and unfortunately I find quite little especially Aboriginal music groups. One hit was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaBI1SqIhak

@Niklo74 Every human alive today is descended from the same relatively small group of Homo Sapiens in our distant past. Modern genetics reveals there is less than 1% difference between what were once called races, i.e. there are no races.
When the British arrived and explored this country from the late 18th century they noted clear physical differences indicating a variety of migration origins. Today most Australians who register Aboriginal ancestry are more Anglo-European in ancestry than anything else. More to the point, in 1788 there were 350 plus groups without a common language and today there are thousands of variations on that theme. There was not and is not a unified group which could be called Aboriginal. They were not one people in 1788 although today, as Australians, with a common language, English, we are all one people.

Niklo74

@Roslyn Ross Personally I would use other words but for me it sounds correct what you write. Today all humans are Homo Sapiens. So the genetic differences are quite small. Nevertheless there are people who's appearance look more archaic than other people and maybe somehow preserved this appearance or got this appearance because it has benefits in the area these people live. Independant of more or less archaic appearance all people are brothers and sisters and all kind of people are beautiful and fascinating. As we are talking of Aboriginal people here an example of beautiful and wonderful musicians from Australia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmLVxRS_Sxs

You have to come to Australia for yourself, and see the diversity of Aboriginal hair. It’s all genetic whether you’re full blooded or mixed raced Aboriginal. Besides blonde hair Aboriginal hair comes in different textures from straight, wavy, Afro, long or curly. Colours are varied from black, brown, blonde, red etc.
