Much of Autechre's music has a strong focus on complex rhythm and driving percussion, and more recently, on meticulous sequencing. Later work has been notably experimental and abstract, in contrast to the more club-friendly and conventional early 1990s releases.
Booth and Brown formed the group in 1987 while they were both living in Rochdale, United Kingdom. They began by making and trading electro and hip-hop mixtapes, but gradually collected some cheap equipment (most notably a Casio SK-1 Sampler) and moved on to their own compositions.
Augmatic Disport
Autechre Lyrics

This disport is so augmatic
(AUGMATIC)
It is like a kind of magic
(MAGIC)
And baby when you dance
I can see a bowl of crisps in your eyes
(EYES)
The lyrics to Autechre's song Augmatic Disport are quite cryptic and open to interpretation. The title itself is a play on words, combining the words 'augmented' and 'automatic', suggesting a futuristic and machine-like quality to the disport, or the act of dancing. The opening line "Whoh oh, oh" is a common adlib in electronic music and serves as a starting point for the rest of the lyrics.
The singer describes the disport as 'augmatic', suggesting that it is something that is enhanced or mediated by technology. The following line, "It is like a kind of magic", further emphasizes the mystical and otherworldly qualities of the dance. The lyric "And baby when you dance, I can see a bowl of crisps in your eyes" is perhaps the most enigmatic of the three. It is possible to interpret this as a metaphor for the flashy, colorful and addictive qualities of the dance. The crisps could be a stand-in for any kind of indulgence or vice, suggesting that the dance is so captivating that it takes on these qualities.
Some might argue that in the grand scheme of things, the lyrics don't matter much in this song. The focus of Augmatic Disport is firmly on the complex and intricate soundscape that Autechre have created. The track is a prime example of their signature style, characterized by glitchy, abstract electronic beats and ever-shifting rhythms. The song was released on their 1997 album, Chiastic Slide, and remains one of their most beloved tracks.
