Much of Autechre's music has a strong focus on complex rhythm and driving percussion, and more recently, on meticulous sequencing. Later work has been notably experimental and abstract, in contrast to the more club-friendly and conventional early 1990s releases.
Booth and Brown formed the group in 1987 while they were both living in Rochdale, United Kingdom. They began by making and trading electro and hip-hop mixtapes, but gradually collected some cheap equipment (most notably a Casio SK-1 Sampler) and moved on to their own compositions.

I have been here many times before
Hurt myself again today
And the worst part is there's no one else to blame
Be my friend, hold me
Wrap me up, unfold me
I am small, I'm needy
Ouch, I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found
Yeah, I think that I might break
Lost myself again and I feel unsafe
Be my friend, hold me
Wrap me up, unfold me
I am small, I'm needy
Warm me up and breathe me
Be my friend, hold me
Wrap me up, unfold me
I am small, I'm needy
Warm me up and breathe me
The lyrics to Autechre's "Flutter" suggest a conflicted and fragile individual who has had a history of self-harm and struggles to cope with the pain they cause themselves. The singer admits to having hurt themselves again, and feels a sense of helplessness and self-blame. The repetition of "I have been here many times before" highlights a pattern of self-destructive behavior, and the use of "ouch" creates a childlike tone to emphasize the hurt they are experiencing.
The singer then asks for comfort and support from a friend. They want to be wrapped up and cared for, as if they are a small, needy child. The repetition of "be my friend, hold me, wrap me up, unfold me" emphasizes the desire for warmth and care. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability, self-blame, and the need for comfort and support.
