Much of Autechre's music has a strong focus on complex rhythm and driving percussion, and more recently, on meticulous sequencing. Later work has been notably experimental and abstract, in contrast to the more club-friendly and conventional early 1990s releases.

Booth and Brown formed the group in 1987 while they were both living in Rochdale, United Kingdom. They began by making and trading electro and hip-hop mixtapes, but gradually collected some cheap equipment (most notably a Casio SK-1 Sampler) and moved on to their own compositions.

I had a little interview with the charming Alex Rutterford when I was a design student back in 2007 and he said that maybe 1% of the video was animated but everything was painstaking frame by frame modeling in Lightwave 3D due to the manic timing of the song. He said that he would definitely NOT do it again as it turned into more of a labour of love and respect for Autechre than it was for money! He nearly went mad with the frame by frame syncopation to music and the project went on too long on a tight budget. And it helped with whatever he was smoking at the time...

HAHA! I had an MRI of my neck and head around the same time this came out and I thought the same thing! I was heavily into Autechre, Aphex Twin, Photek, Squarepusher, Chris Clark, all those guys...I made it a new genre called glitch-n-bass. I wish I could have recorded the MRI because some of the sounds and rhythms went beyond even what I was listening to, musically, at the time.
I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Proud owner of a ZX48 and i loved to ear the magic melody of it while slowly unveiling the intro image line by line.....now to mention the sounds of the turbo tapes which kinda reminded me the sounds of the C64 tape loading. Thing is, while ae are much better and deeper technically, Richard's music is, believe it or not, friendlier. Its easier to get into Aphex cause you get tunes, melodies, and an attitude behind the music, his irony and perversity, you get to see a personality which you can relate with. Autechre has always sounded like a psychopath computer, which i totally have no problem with that, drives me nuts and cant get off it, but i do understand why people often pay little to no attention to them, lack humanity in that regard.

Apparently animated entirely by hand - google throws up an interview with the animator. I had always assumed it was procedural, but no. He must have been really really slick with whatever animation software he used.

This is done in a 3D suite like maya or 3DS max. It's possible some elements were "motion sketched" meaning he used a mouse or tablet to move the elements, then those movements were recorded into automation. the assets are not hand-drawn, this is a CG render with some post processing.

@etzöy. Exai, or "ex AI" as I opt to interpret it, is quite a different story. It just happened so that my preferred Ae time period is somewhere around Confield/Draft (and of course Gantz Graf, which essentially dates back to 1999). It feels like Exai signifies an entirely different continuum separated by more than a decade from Confield and also a lot of upgrades in the tech/software domain so you can't directly compare Exai and Confield in terms of "quality", "aesthetics", "complexity" or whatever. All in all Exai is a great achievement and a great listen but that doesn't make this particular track (as we're talking about Gantz Graf) any less interesting or even "catchy".
