Much of Autechre's music has a strong focus on complex rhythm and driving percussion, and more recently, on meticulous sequencing. Later work has been notably experimental and abstract, in contrast to the more club-friendly and conventional early 1990s releases.

Booth and Brown formed the group in 1987 while they were both living in Rochdale, United Kingdom. They began by making and trading electro and hip-hop mixtapes, but gradually collected some cheap equipment (most notably a Casio SK-1 Sampler) and moved on to their own compositions.

@fior Yes exactly that, listening to Autechre makes it seem like being in another world or universe, I've said same thing many times! You can be walking down the street and you get a weird, mysterious feeling... :-)

@Illuminated Skeletons This album was my introduction to Autechre, too. I still remember walking around Binghamton that night with my headphones on, listening to the track Bike and seeing the world through new eyes. Thank goodness for electronic music!!

Because all I'm hearing is a similar sounding (but not quite the same) synth / electronic piano chord pattern. EDIT: That's because it's not from Summer Madness - people have been lazily saying it's from there for years because it sounds sort of similar. This is eerie to how close this sounds to a modern Hiphop beat, then again I’ve always felt like IDM/downtempo always had a similar connection to instrumental Hiphop

To be honest, hip hop and Detroit Techno have a lot of similarities, maybe not in sound, but in their historical context and development during the 80s, so i think that when all this music jump to UK & Europe in the 90s, it was natural for some people to experiment mixing characteristics of the two worlds (electronic music and hip hop, which is also electronic in some aspects). Trip Hop it's most obvious but not the only one. Even what people call today lo-fi hip hop it's like a hip hop version of ambient techno/IDM from the 90s

Almost all of BOC beats are fundamentally hip-hop oriented. It's just their sound design and harmony that gives cerebral touch to their music.

@King of Swamp Castle Re Doo Bop, got my dates mixed up, Davis took it from Premier. Premier took it from Jamal and did a ton of chopping and pitch shifting on the sample and the Autechre sample is 100% from this, not from the original. I've just A/B'd the two tracks and the Ae sample is exactly the same as the Premier opening loop.

@JJ Whittle Don't you hear a similarity in the piano in the opening bars of the Ahmad Jamal track (the ones in the first eight seconds)? 'In Deep Concentration' by Gang Starr preceded the Doo Bop song by Miles Davis. I agree with another comment on here which suggested that DJ Premier overlaid a small segment from the Ahmad Jamal piano riff onto the Summer Madness chords (btw 'Who sampled who' mentions both those tracks on the page about 'In Deep Concentration'.)
