Much of Autechre's music has a strong focus on complex rhythm and driving percussion, and more recently, on meticulous sequencing. Later work has been notably experimental and abstract, in contrast to the more club-friendly and conventional early 1990s releases.
Booth and Brown formed the group in 1987 while they were both living in Rochdale, United Kingdom. They began by making and trading electro and hip-hop mixtapes, but gradually collected some cheap equipment (most notably a Casio SK-1 Sampler) and moved on to their own compositions.

the first time i heard this was on a road trip from philly to montana for 2 weeks in the wilderness. this was put on on the way back, going through chicago at night. after two weeks disconnected, seeing a big city again in the night with this as a soundtrack was surreal and the feeling i'll never forget. as avenue after avenue passed perpendicular to the freeway, and under overpasses, i felt a sense that all was out of control. the tecnomiasma of the new 21st century was a giant equation leading to ultimate doom. the atmosphere of autechre provided the perfect moment for epiphany. this may be my favorite release of theirs. bridging the gap between their more glitchy/abstract era to come and the more melodic one preceding it.
