After All Life Is Far Too Easy
Automatic Buffalo Lyrics

People liked me for my face
At first they thought I came in peace
This beautiful stranger among them
And the conversation seemed to work out all right
When I joined in I told a lie only once or twice
Now we're alone again this time it seems for real
We're alone again this time might be for real
I was cursed by teachers and lied to by lovers
After all, life's far too easy
My party started with drinks for free
And after that people paid
For things they've never ordered in the first place
And an honest (fair) profit was made
Now we're alone again this time it seems for real
We're alone again this time might be for real
I was cursed by teachers and lied to by lovers
After all, life's far too easy
Normal things happening all the time
The opening lines of Automatic Buffalo's "After All Life Is Far Too Easy" explore the alienation and deception the singer faces when trying to navigate life on Earth. As an outsider, they were initially welcomed by others who were charmed by their appearance. However, the singer's conversation is later revealed to be deceptive. They admit to lying only "once or twice," suggesting that their deception is not pervasive, but it still exists. The last two lines of this verse suggest that the singer is not content with their initial deception and now feels truly alone, perhaps because their true self is not being accepted.
The second verse shifts in tone, describing the singer's experiences with education and love. Both of these sources of guidance have failed the singer, leaving them "cursed" and "lied to." It seems that the singer believes that deceiving others is a natural consequence of living in a world that is "far too easy." The final verse describes the singer's experience of throwing a party where people are tricked into paying for things they did not order, but the singer still makes an "honest profit." The repetition of the phrase "We're alone again this time.." reinforces the idea that the singer feels disconnected from others, and their attempts to engage in social situations is fraught with deception and alienation.
