The Floating test only works with certain dense fluids and is highly dependant on which diamond imitation it is. In general all those tests only work to identify Glass, rock crystal, CZ, YAG, Fabulite and similar imitations. Moissanite can't be identified with most of the tests. Very informative nevertheless.

If you guys ever want an apprentice I'm only in Kent and I have a degree in silversmithing, goldsmithing and jewellery design. I interviewed in Hatton Garden last week but they cast everything and fob it off as genuine handmade, I can't work like that because I want to learn the proper goldsmithing skills and actually hand make real top quality work

Really interesting..As a child aged about 6 I found what I thought was a diamond ring... Dad took it too the police station and they said it was a fake... they tried to scratch glass with it.
I remember the disappointment... Plus the coppers said if it were a real diamond of that size, it wouldn't be in a silver mount. True enough.

Tfs! Truly appreciate your videos. They are very helpful. I have a question about an issue ive been having and was wondering if you had any advice? So, i recently made a diamond four prong solitaire ring and have been having trouble with the prongs catching on everything and i am afraid i will lose the stone if i wear it. So its put away for now. I made a 22k gold alloy and platinum twist makume gane type of band and a platinum four prong setting. I have cut, polished, and burnished them down as close as i can. And feel if i go any further i will end up not having enough metal to actually hold on barely over the gurtle. (Sorry if my spelling is incorrect.lol)

My guess is that in the newspaper test it all depends on the reflectivity of the 'diamond' and the shape of the precious stone. It will not work on a decently cut moissanite or zirconia.

Just finished picking through about 10 quarts of river gravels and there were loads of stones. Pink, yellow, red, green, orange, purple, white, all varrying shape and size. I know in my state we have every type of gemstone, excluding Ruby, but not every color. Would the tests work on uncut diamonds? What is a good broad spectrum gem tester?

These tests only work on cubic zirconia and will not work to separate moissanite from diamond.

CZ is easy to spot over time as it's much softer and thus becomes hazy and scratched up.

@Jonathon Calleija Sandpaper is not a good test as most sandpaper is made of aluminium oxide which has a lower hardness than moissanite.

Moissanite is easy to spot compared to cz. I don't need to test moissanite coz the excessive fire, doubling effect, greenish color, rounded girdle and hazyness is conclusive as moissanite. A fine quality cz is the one that looks realistically like diamonds.

@John Smalldridge Where I come from glass paper (sand paper) has a light finish as it has glass on it. The black coloured abrasive paper we call "Emery Paper" and the abrasive substance is aluminium oxide.

@Geese Beemps If you look at the economics of collectibles, you'd see that the condition and quality has a massive impact on price elasticity, and the indifference curve would reflect that. Those who are into collecting things typically want things in the absolute best condition possible, even a small scratch on some pieces result in massive price differences. People that are into collecting and trading any high-dollar commodity like diamonds, old currency/coins, baseball cards, comic books, antique firearms, rare books, etc can pick up the small, minute differences in condition, and those small differences translate to thousands of dollars in value. Currency graded as a perfect 70 vs 55 for example will look almost identical but the price differences are astronomical.

@Geese Beemps Very true, and so is legal tender, but in reality just because we all agree it's worth, use it everyday and strive so hard to have it, it becomes valuable. I'd rather a diamond than dollar bills honestly. One is still currency if legal tender failed.

The newspaper test has a simple explanation and it should work for fake gems made of plastic or glass. Diamonds are mineral gems in general are crystalline materials which means that they diffract light. The light changes direction and is dispersed so you can't really see the letters. On the other hand, plastic and glass are amorphous or semi crystalline (best case scenario) so they don't diffract light. But you can't tell with this test if it's diamond or zirconia. All of the tests proposed here have solid scientific explanation.

Nice info guys, but what’s you views on the new lab diamonds that are being produced at a fraction of the cost, these lab diamonds under the microscope look no different than the real ones. This could upset the market for diamond dealers

I understand why you might want to know if your in the market for diamonds, but because of all the slavery and other issues, I'm actually more comfortable with a manufactured fake. As long as it is above board, and everyone involved in the sale knows what they are getting, a fake can be much more ethical.

Sandpaper method passed...

CVD? I was not allowed to use destructive methods, I'd forgotten those! My fav was the ancient ' smack it with a hammer test. ' Of course it will destroy both real and interior stones. But I digress .. . Lol!

Tbh I find it interesting the way people dislike CZ and love diamond. CZ is far more perfect in its colourlessness, it is more weighted on the finger, it literally shines brighter or shall I say it makes rainbows and diamond barely does. Diamond often has brown or yellow tinge in the stone and is lighter and less sheer. The only real reason diamond is better is the hardness of the two stones, CZ scratches over time and shows wear and tear, diamond will not show scratches. CZ is an 8 hardness while diamond is a 10. But then CZ is so cheap you could just get another stone put in everytime scratches showed after extended use. Hahah but I guess... “diamonds are forever”.

The only one I can see i could do to make sure at a jewelry shop is breathing hot air on to a diamond ring. If the fog doesn’t even stay on it , it’s real, if it stays on it’s fake.

I have a real diamond earrings comparison and its still confusing. I did the UV test, all the little squares making 1 large princess cut reveals a few stones having a glow sediments that holds a charge after the light is removed while other stones in the same set don't yet all are real.
Best take what you to to pawn as they test, they don't need to know you don't intend to but wanted a quote for if you do : )

I found a diamond on a cafe, and i used the lighter technique. Lol, i guess you can figure out what happened next, but fyi it did pass the newspaper test and the fog test. The lighter completely destroyed it.
