They recorded two songs, "Rock Me" and "Minus Love", for a compilation released by the radio station 95YNF and played a show in a K-Mart parking lot to support the release. They released a demo on cassette in February 1983, Living for the Night. In September 1983 they released an 7" EP City Beneath the Surface. Roadkill
Avatar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We're all gonna die
It's the code of the roadkill
It's the call of the night
Our force is stronger than ever
And the flames grow higher now
We're going down
Crawl through Gehenna
It is crossing our path
Some will be crushed and some will still stand
Whatever the cost we'll deliver
And we'll all be remembered forever
Raise your glass for all the roadkills on the side of the road
Our brothers who died by death 'n' roll
In the end we all will be roadkills out in the cold
Sister, you wen and sold your soul
May God show mercy on your soul
We're in for the pleasure
We're in for the ride
It's the way of the living
It's the way we will die
Our anger is stronger than ever
And our bounds are tighter now
And there's no time to get away, NO!
We'll take this town
The song Roadkill by Avatar depicts a sense of reckless abandon and a disregard for consequences in the pursuit of pleasure and thrill. The lyrics suggest that the characters in the song are aware of their inevitable demise, yet they persist in their hurried journey towards it. The line, "It's the code of the roadkill", indicates that they have adopted a mindset that prioritizes living in the moment and embracing the danger rather than shying away from it.
The chorus of the song reinforces this idea, with the repetition of the phrase "we're all gonna die" and the reference to roadkill, which traditionally refers to animals crushed by vehicles. The imagery of crawling through Gehenna further emphasizes the dark, dangerous undertones of the song. Despite the danger and sense of foreboding, the characters in the song embrace their fate and vow to "all be remembered forever".
The use of vivid, visceral language and violent imagery emphasizes the theme of death and recklessness. Yet, the overall tone of the song is almost celebratory. The "pleasure" and "ride" are framed as exhilarating experiences, and the characters seem almost proud of their willingness to embrace their fate.
