They recorded two songs, "Rock Me" and "Minus Love", for a compilation released by the radio station 95YNF and played a show in a K-Mart parking lot to support the release. They released a demo on cassette in February 1983, Living for the Night. In September 1983 they released an 7" EP City Beneath the Surface. Shortly after, "Avatar" was forced to change its name due to copyright issues. Combining the words "Savage" and "Avatar", the band decided on Savatage.
Another Avatar demo compilation surfaced in 1999, Beyond The Doors Of The Pit. Savatage released the Avatar demos on The Hammer Comes Down Demos.

Let me in and we'll pretend
Light some candles, do not cry
I'll sing you a lullaby
You've lost your key and cannot leave
I'll play with you and make believe
I'll keep you safe with all my power
In every stone I'll carve your name
Nothing will be quite the same
Laughter at the midnight hour
In our own little tower
Ashes paint our bedroom gray
These shall be our finest days
As I pledge, my precious flower
Keep you safe in a tower
Stay inside and dream of towers
Wake up all alone
Welcome home
All alone you count the hours
Right where you belong
Welcome home
Don't be scared, you won't be hurt
I promise that I'll keep my word
Just behave and we can play
Just do everything I say
Do not speak and do not think
I will give you everything
Everything within my power
I will bring to your tower
Stay inside and dream of towers
Wake up all alone
Welcome home
All alone you count the hours
Right where you belong
Welcome home
See your home on the horizon
What you were will fade away
Every day of every season
Is devoured by the gray
Stay inside and dream of towers
Wake up all alone
Welcome home
All alone you count the hours
Right where you belong
Welcome home
The lyrics of Avatar's song "Tower" appear to be about a person who is looking for someone to connect with, someone who seems to be in a state of emotional distress. The singer speaks to this person, offering to be their friend, and to help them cope with their issues. There are clear indications that the person being addressed is experiencing some kind of psychological or emotional difficulty, as they are described as having lost their key and being unable to leave. They are also invited to "stay inside and dream of towers," suggesting that they are in a kind of self-imposed isolation.
The singer promises to keep the person safe, and to "build them a tower," which seems to be a metaphor for a safe, secure, and protected mental space. The tower is described as being made of stone, with the person's name carved into every stone. Meanwhile, the ashes of what was once their life have painted their bedroom gray. Despite this, the singer promises that these will be their finest days, and pledges to keep them safe.
The lyrics take on a more sinister tone towards the end, with the singer instructing the person to "just behave and we can play" and to "not speak and not think." This suggests that the safety and protection offered by the tower may come at a cost of the person's own autonomy and individuality. The final lines of the song suggest that the person may eventually come to regret their decision to retreat into their tower, as they will see their former life fading away on the horizon.
