They recorded two songs, "Rock Me" and "Minus Love", for a compilation released by the radio station 95YNF and played a show in a K-Mart parking lot to support the release. They released a demo on cassette in February 1983, Living for the Night. In September 1983 they released an 7" EP City Beneath the Surface. Use Your Tongue
Avatar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Time to wake up
Good morning
Rise and shine
Getting ready for the enemy
It's the calm before the storm
Hate your neighbor
Use your tongue
To clean her wounds
In Avatar's song Use Your Tongue, the lyrics "No sleep for you, time to wake up, good morning, rise and shine" immediately set the tone for the upcoming chaos. It's essentially a call to arms, urging the listener to wake up and prepare for battle against an as-yet-unknown enemy. The following line, "getting ready for the enemy, it's the calm before the storm", builds on this sense of foreboding, indicating that while things may seem peaceful now, the storm is coming.
The line "hate your neighbor, love your enemy" is particularly interesting, as it's a reversal of the traditional saying "love thy neighbor, hate thine enemy". It suggests a willingness to fight for what you believe in, even if it means turning on those closest to you. And yet, the final line of the verse, "use your tongue to clean her wounds", brings an unexpected note of empathy to the mix. It reminds us that, even in the midst of battle and conflict, there are still innocent victims who need our help and care.
Overall, "Use Your Tongue" is a powerful and provocative song that encourages listeners to wake up and fight for what they believe in, while still retaining an essential humanity and empathy for others.
