Avey Tare met Animal Collective's Deakin (Josh Dibb), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) in high school. For years, the four of them swapped homemade recordings, shared musical ideas and performed in different group configurations. Avey Tare recorded the Spirit Theyâre Gone, Spirit Theyâve Vanished album with Panda Bear, and initially released the recording on the band's own Animal label in 2000.
After high school, Avey Tare and Geologist moved to New York City to attend NYU and Columbia University, respectively. Panda Bear and Deakin had eventually moved to NYC, and the band started to become more collaborative in nature. They finally settled on the name "Animal Collective".
Avery Tare released his first proper solo album, Down There, on October 25, 2010. Eucalyptus followed in July 2017, with the Essence of Eucalyptus EP, featuring remixes from various Animal Collective members, coming the year after. March 2019 brought Cows on Hourglass Pond, his most recent solo venture to date.
Avey Tare's other projects and releases include Terrestrial Tones with Eric Copeland of Black Dice, a split 12" with David Grubbs, an LP with his exwife (ex-MĂșm) KristĂn Anna ValtĂœsdĂłttir (aka KrĂa Brekkan) called Pullhair Rubeye, and Avery Tareâs Slasher Flicks with ex-Dirty Projectors member Angel Deradoorian and ex-Ponytail drummer Jeremy Hyman.
Saturdays
Avey Tare Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The red, the white, the blue, the opaque
Smoking up into a nothing
Some sweet replies warmin' up out of the oven
Scents'll play a wonderful day
Sights'll be exploding
A person to thank and a push in the lake and
Things that I am hoping for you
And some may try, get a little superstitious
There's lots of cracks in many days
Oh so many wishes
But I never know why
We picked on Saturdays
Doo doo, doo doo
Should be just like all the days
But I do know why
It would never quite function for Mondays
'Cause they remind me of those Saturdays
"My, how time flies!" said my younger cousin
"My, how time flies!" said my younger cousin
I turned a break through a southern pond
Where the dragonfly she would buzz on
I turned a break through a southern pond
Where the dragonfly she would buzz on
But I don't know why
Peaked on Saturdays
Doo doo, doo doo
Should be just like all the days
But I do know why
It would never quite function for Mondays
'Cause they remind me of those Saturdays
Doo doo, doo, completeness
Doo doo, doo, completeness
Doo doo, doo, completeness
Doo doo, doo, comp
"Saturdays" by Avey Tare is a reflection on the unique energy of Saturdays, and the memories and feelings that the day brings up for the songwriter. The opening lyrics set the tone with a surreal image of completeness being written on a cake, with colors like red, white, and blue coming together to create an opaque and smoky effect. From there, the song moves into a series of cryptic and evocative lines, with references to scents and sights exploding, hopes and wishes, and cracks in many days.
Despite this fragmented approach to songwriting, the central message of "Saturdays" is clear: there's something special about this day that sets it apart from the rest of the week. Avey Tare reflects on the way that Saturdays represent a break from the routine and a chance to unwind, while also acknowledging the bittersweet memories that come with the day. For the songwriter, many of these memories are tied up in childhood experiences and family gatherings, with specific lines like "My, how time flies!" implying a sense of nostalgia and loss.
Overall, "Saturdays" is a dreamy and introspective piece that captures the seductive allure of a lazy weekend day. With its poetic imagery and enigmatic lyrics, the song invites listeners to reflect on their own memories and feelings associated with this time of the week.

@@user-xg6zz8qs3q Don't hate yourself haha, you deserve better. I've listened to Magic Oneohtrix Point Never a lot, one of the trippiest albums I've ever heard - to the point where it's almost a little intimidating, haha.
I can't say I've found anything truly similar to Animal Collective's particular style of Psychedelia, but here are some other artists that are up there in terms of how much they "get it" if you know what I mean:
- MGMT (Congratulations is really great but everything after it, albums and 2-track project alike, is masterpiece-worthy in my opinion)
- Shpongle (one of those rare bands where you could listen to any album at random and it'll always be perfect)
- Mid-Air Thief (quite new, he also released some music under Hyoo; Crumbling is his current magnum opus in my opinion and is both humbling and a pleasure to trip to)
- Spirit of the Beehive (their name reminds me of Animal Collective's song Honeycomb; not much else to say since I only recently discovered them, but listen to ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH)
- Dan Deacon (Bromst is good, America is great, Gliss Riffer is great, but Mystic Familiar is an absolute masterpiece and one of the most thrilling and emotionally fulfilling rides I've ever taken, and I'm addicted to it)
- Beach House (a bit of an outlier on this list as they're less overall trippy, but check this out sometime in the future, and if you do trip, consider watching while you're tripping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyclbb_6Ycs )
