Otherside
Avi Kaplan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Emerald ivy
Wrapped around my skin

Pulls me deeper
Drags me back again

Tangle me up in your vines
Take my spirit, take my mind
Take me over to that other side

Ruby river glowing in the sun

Wash me over
Show me where you run

Roll me deeper in your tide
Take my spirit, take my mind
Take me over to that other side

Silver moonlight
Come show me the way

Hold me over 'til the break of day

Lead me closer to your light

Take my spirit, take my mind
Take me over to that other side

Overall Meaning

In Avi Kaplan's song "Otherside", he sings about being entranced by nature's beauty and succumbing to its power. The recurring theme of being "taken over to that other side" suggests a desire to escape reality and explore a new realm of existence. The first line "Emerald ivy wrapped around my skin" could be interpreted as nature's embrace, holding him close and forming an intimate relationship with the environment. The following lines "Pulls me deeper, drags me back again" indicate a struggle between the desire to escape and the pull of reality.

The second verse continues with the imagery of nature, describing a "ruby river glowing in the sun" and a desire to be washed over and shown where it flows. In this verse, the sense of surrender to nature is stronger, with the line "Roll me deeper in your tide." The final verse brings in the image of the "silver moonlight" serving as a guide to lead him towards a new experience. The repetition of the line "Take my spirit, take my mind" reinforces the idea of letting go of the current state of being and embracing a new one.

Overall, the song's lyrics suggest a desire for transformation and escape through connecting with nature. The imagery of ivy, rivers, and moonlight helps to build a vivid picture of the journey towards the "other side."

I’m back to listen to this song again , as I do whenever I desperately need to calm down because anxiety . I can’t even describe with words just how soothing to the core this is , with both headphones in closing your eyes it just feels like music is able to tune everything else out , breathing in and out . Been listening to him before he went solo and his music is so soulful it’s truly a blessing

@@VinAnrba , and this song is, for God is Beauty and this song and video is thoroughly beautiful, despite all the shades of blue it has. I have noticed that many people find loneliness as like being stranded in a dark foggy forest, while for others is the solitude that allows oneself to look within and hear that VOICE that guides us – a voice that can't be heard with ears... of body or mind.
