My Own Worst Enemy
Avril Lavigne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can we forget about the things I said when I was drunk?
I didn't mean to call you that;
I can't remember what was said or what you threw at me

Please tell me,Please tell me why?
My car is in the front yard
And I'm sleeping with my clothes oooon
I came in through the window last night
And you're gone gone

( it begins here : )

It's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy,
'cause every now and then I kick the living sh*t out of me
The smoke alarm is going off when there's a cigarette
Still burning

Please tell me why
My car is in the front yard
And I'm sleeping with my clothes on
I came in through the window last night
And you're gone gone

Please tell me why
My car is in the front yard
And I'm sleeping with my clothes on
I came in through the window last night

It's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy
'cause every now and then I kick the living sh*t out of me

Can we forget about the the things I said when I was drunk
I didn't mean to call you that

Overall Meaning

In Avril Lavigne’s song “My Own Worst Enemy,” the singer is apologizing for their drunken behavior in a relationship, acknowledging that they are their own worst enemy. The song begins with the singer wanting to forget the things they said when intoxicated, as they cannot remember and did not mean to insult their partner. The next two lines provide specific details about the singer’s current state, where their car is in the front yard and they are still wearing their clothes from the previous night, having slept with them on. We learn that the singer entered through the window because their partner is no longer in the house when they awaken.

The main theme of “My Own Worst Enemy” is that while the singer may have external forces that contribute to their turmoil, they are the ones who cause most of their pain. This is expressed in the chorus where the singer says, “It's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy, 'cause every now and then I kick the living sh*t out of me.” The singer feels they are responsible for the majority of their problems, and this is most likely why their partner left. The final lines of the song revisit the opening of the song, asking for forgiveness for their drunken words in a plea to rekindle the relationship.

@skill3rpanda I thought you were finished arguing? xD thought not, guess we'll have to keep on You're obviously no Avril fan, as it's insulting saying this is her... for one Avril Lavigne doesn't lose breath while singing and can hold a note!

skill3rpanda

@TheBenAppleby 1.Covers aren't usually posted in brochures. Its a bonus type thing to what the audience expects. 2. When someone is projecting their voice, their accent is tweaked. And she doesn't even sound "texan" there. You should probably grow up in Texas before making that assumption. 3. I'm sorry if making a typo makes me a dumbass. But how does knowing how to spell her name relate to going to the concert and hearing her sing it?? Genius. 4. Live concert VS recorded CD. Again. Genius.

Not Avril...fo'sho! lol

skill3rpanda

@TheBenAppleby Um. I'm not trying to cover back, & for the record, I've proven you wrong. and I have further evidence that I found last night while playing Rock Band 2. xD If you don't have it that sucks for you because when you choose the song "My own worst enemy" by Lit. When the songs loading they tend to show random facts in the middle of the television screen.. and therefor you are proven wrong when one of the facts show that Avril Lavigne has covered "My own worst enemy" in a live concert.
