My World
Avril Lavigne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please tell me what is taking place
'Cause I can't seem to find a trace
Guess it must have got erased somehow

Probably 'cause I always forget
Every time someone tells me their name
It's always gotta be the same
(In my World)
Never wore cover-up
Always beat the boys up
Grew up in a 5000 population town

Made my money by cutting grass
Got fired by fried chicken ass
All in a small town, Napanee

You know I always stay up without sleepin'
And think to myself
Where do I belong forever
In whose arms, the time and place?

Can't help if I space in a daze
My eyes tune out the other way
I may switch off and go in a daydream

In this head my thoughts are deep
But sometimes I can't even speak
Would someone be and not pretend? I'm off again in my World

I never spend less than an hour
Washin' my hair in the shower
It always takes 5 hours to make it straight

So I'll braid it in a zillion braids
Though it may take all friggen day
There's nothin' else better to do anyway

When you're all alone in the lands of forever
Lay under the milky way
On and on it's getting too late out
I'm not in love this time this night

Can't help if I space in a daze
My eyes tune out the other way
I may switch off and go in a daydream
In this head my thoughts are deep
But sometimes I can't even speak
Would someone be and not pretend? I'm off again in my World

Take some time
Mellow out
Party up
But don't fall down
Don't get caught
Sneak out of the house

Can't help if I space in a daze
My eyes tune out the other way
I may switch off and go in a daydream

In this head my thoughts are deep
But sometimes I can't even speak
Would someone be and not pretend? I'm off again in my World

Can't help if I space in a daze
My eyes tune out the other way
I may switch off and go in a daydream

In this head my thoughts are deep

But sometimes I can't even speak
Would someone be and not pretend? I'm off again in my World

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Avril Lavigne's "My World" depict a sense of disconnection and isolation from the outside world. She talks about forgetting people's names and feeling like she doesn't belong anywhere. She grew up in a small town where she had unusual jobs like cutting grass and got fired from a chicken restaurant. Lavigne expresses her thoughts, deep in her head but unable to articulate them clearly. She spends a long time washing her hair and braiding it, as it seems like there's nothing better for her to do anyway. Throughout the song, the repeated phrase "in my World" conveys a sense of solitary confinement and a world that only she understands.

As the song progresses, we see Lavigne's growing frustration with the state of her life. She's getting too late out but her thoughts are deep and dreamlike, with no one to share them with. The lyrics suggest that she's stuck in her own world and can't snap out of it. She encourages herself to take some time, mellow out, and party up but not to get caught by sneaking out of the house. It appears that her world is a safe haven where she can escape from reality but is also where she feels lost and disconnected.

I started listening to Avril Lavigne in the summer of 2002, at 14 years old. I loved this song because I related to it so much, especially the chorus. I'm a grown woman now, and I love listening to this song from time to time because it reminds me that there's a part of myself that's remained the same, that life hasn't wrung out every aspect of me.

This song tells such a brilliant story. One of Avril's best, yet strangely underrated. Twenty plus years on and this whole album is still an awesome piece of musical brilliance.

I was 12 and this was my jam, now I am 23..... you blink and suddenly you're grown up.

Pretty sure this came out like 18 years ago, so you would have been like 5

@David CC And? I listen to music from the 1980s as well. Is there a law that youngsters can't listen to music that was before their time?

David CC

@Rachel S. Nah ur fine! I love old music... it's just funny to me because Let Go by Avril Lavigne is not ur typical popular "vintage" album someone would throw on in 2012. It was a very "of the times" kinda genre that just doesn't exist today.

Rachel S.

@David CC Right lol I listen to whatever I like no matter the date or if it's popular.
