After graduating from high school in Okinawa, she studied in the United States, during which period she married and had a child with an American. Tragically, he was murdered in an incident after her graduation. Following this, she returned to her home island and established Cipher City, a marketing and production company, in order to create content utilising the local resources.
Okinawa today is under political pressure, having been a target of both fascination and discrimination amongst Japan and surrounding Asian nations for years due to its exotic culture and hybrid transformations. Her lyrics, positions, and perceptions turn both the positive and negative aspects of her surroundings — cultural fusions, identity crises, pride and shame — into an honest craft.
In 2017, she released a full album, her first in a decade, in partnership with Chaki Zulu. She flows freely between Japanese, Okinawan and English, piecing together a unique sound while also staying true to the lyrics. Her deep vocals generates a captivating atmosphere for listeners. Awich’ s ability to submerge herself into multiple global perspectives while also adding her signature feminine touch allows her to create music that is singular but relatable across the world.

The title「First Light」is rather self-explanatory。Even in the inescapable darkness, we must believe that light will come again. That belief that light will return again, and move through life rather than life carrying you around. It's that kind of song. Do you all remember how we sang together in a live concert? Even folks who don't speak English well, people who are shy about singing, and people who've never even heard of me or this song. We all raised our voices together and sang that chorus.

2020年2月、(まだコロナ前なのも感慨深い)クラブツアーで姐さんが京都に来てて、この曲歌ってくれて。
私はその時大切な恋人を交通事故(加害者が居るので奪われた感情に近い、仕方ないで終わらせられないお別れでした。)で失ってまだ半年だった。彼の親友に連れられてクラブ行ったものの楽しめず、この曲聴いて釘漬けになって涙涙涙でした。
ずっと泣いてる私、でもすごく心奮い立たされて頑張ろうと思えた。先輩がAwich姉さんと写真撮ってもらおうとVIP席に連れていってくれて、でも私は涙止まらず...。姐さんがどうしたのって聞いてくれて話す事が出来た。私の名前聞いて名前呼びながらしっかり抱きしめてくれた。"私には〇〇の気持ちは100%分かりきれないけれど、貴方が貴方自身を愛する事が1番強いんだよ。"って言ってくれた。私は彼と結婚してなかったし子供も居ないし、夫を殺されて娘を1人で育ててきた姐さんの気持ちも計り知れない。でも同じ類の経験をしたからこそ、だからこそ貴方の気持ちは100%分からないって言葉だった。その時その瞬間、誰が1番辛いとかなくて皆辛いんだから、自分自身を精一杯生きるだけなんだ。と思えた。そこから時間はかかったけど、今笑顔で彼の分も生きています。この曲、Awich姐さんとの出会いは絶対私に必要だった💎ありがとうございます。
