Favorite aspect is how Dae-SU starts out the fight aggressive. Except he quickly realizes that was a mistake as him rushing forward ends with him getting surrounded and easily overwhelmed. Then after he gets stabbed, he changes tactics. He plays dead until he can surprise them, then runs until he's in a position where they can't gang up on him again. Instead of trying to take the whole group at once, he plays defensively, waiting for them to attack so he can dodge then counter. He keeps doing this until he manages to whittle down the whole group. Shows that while Dae-SU is tough enough to take a whole lot of punishment, he's also smart enough to recognize when he can't brute force his way through a problem. All this conveyed through just the choreography.

It’s traumatic for the hands & would render you unable to ever be able to do fine craftsmanship or play a piano or string instrument, but really will make someone pack an exponentially harder punch. The best about this fight is that is not about the perfection of the fight choreography (where many times the MC tends to be overpower and can kill instantly the bad guys) BUT is about the struggle, the effort from the MC to get his goal. you can feel the empathy and the struggle from the protagonist and kinda yell to his ear "get up, fight back!" moment. At the beginning of the fight the guards look pretty confident but at the end they're utterly terrified by Oh Dae-su. And even though he's hurt and tired, even though he's holding back to preserve himself, even though he tripped and fell unto the floor, the guys in front of him are sincerely afraid of him, he's dominating the scene even though he's seriously not fine at all. THIS is how you make a great fighting scene !

I just love how they made Oh Dae-Su look like a fucking monster that can kick the shit out of a dozen guys at once but at the same time show that he's not even that great a fighter? He's fighting thugs and kids and gets his ass beat a few times doing it. He knows how to punch but it's not like he's going full Goku on anyone here, if they knocked him down again it's not impossible ot believe that he'd be properly down.

Yet because he has a presence that screams unrelenting badass and the fact that he just keeps getting up like a zombie despite the ass beating he's getting makes him seem invulnerable, immovable and promptly scares every guy he's been fighting shitless and then makes the backup look at him like he's a fucking terminator staring them down.

Not only is the choreography amazing, but the acting too. I love how you can see the fear overtake the crowd. No one wants to be the next guy to get punched, so they’re hesitant until a brave few think “there’s more of us than him” and try and fail to take him down, only reinforcing everyone else’s fear. What a lovely piece of cinema. Oldboy is an amazing film, but this HAS to be the best scene in the movie for me. The action is brutal, clumsy, and it really sells the desperate struggle both parties go through as the action goes on. The initial burst of energy Oh Dae-Su shows as he pushes through the crowds with his hammer gives way to an honestly brutal beat down by the goons in the hallway. It only makes it more impressive to see that second wind. Bloodied and beaten, a knife in his back, this badass of a businessman gets right back up, and immediately starts fighting again. The surprise and terror that the goons have is wonderful, and what was once multiple people charging are just a bunch of terrified men pushing each other forward into this living meat grinder. That isn't even mentioning the SCORE. God this scene is awesome.

One of the cool things to me about the tiny choreography errors increasing as the scenes nears the end is the supernatural aspect it lends the character's influence over his weakening attackers. Starting with virtually no errors in a visually believable sequence hooks me into the visceral realism of the fight, but gradually little glitches in the matrix start popping up, as if the warrior who has proven himself is granted some additional leeway by fate herself. By the end he is a sort of damaged god, with the assumption that his victory over the fresh fighters in the elevator is so inevitable we don't even need to see it.

I love the clumsiness of the fight. It’s choreographed in a way that makes it feel more like a real fight. If you’ve ever been in one involving more than two ppl, it’s chaotic as hell. Ppl punching and grabbing you everywhere. Great scene, and kind of a subversion of the “one vs many” trope guys like Bruce Lee popularized.

One of my favorite things about it is that... people don't really "go down" the way they do in other movies. John Oldboy isn't Saitama, he's making them hurt, but he's not magically strong enough to KO a dozen guys after spending five minutes getting tossed around by them. He uses a balance of trickery, skill and sheer endurance to win the fight, outlasting them in the long run, being quicker than their haymakers and playing dead when they get him down. Even when it's over they're just kind of rolling around on the floor, trying to get up, miserable. It's so much acting from so many different people in one scene.

@@Kinos141 Dae-su has self trained for years non stop and the guys fighting him are random ass street punks. While it's a bit far fetched for a man who has been isolated for a decade to fight that well, the guys he's going up against don't really know how to fight, whereas he does. And even then, he gets stabbed in the back and fucking beaten down twice in this fight, and is left visibly haggard.

Movies aren't made to be realistic, even the realistic ones don't do that. This fight is fantastical but makes it so the viewer does not have to stretch their suspension of disbelief a lot, unless you've been in street fights, you could reasonably expect that a street fight could look like this, and you suspend your disbelief that one guy can beat a gang of people.

This scene is incredible. The moment he gets stabbed, he transitions from a man who was simply willing to fight all of these guys, to a pure avatar of violence. After he gets back up he doesn't cry out in pain, doesn't let them get the upper hand on him... He just becomes singlemindedly focused on beating the shit out of every other person in the hallway

I like to think that Dae-su, due to his 18 year imprisonment, has a form of claustrophobia, but instead of being afraid of cramped spaces, he just gets really fucking pissed off. So in a way, these guys picked the worst possible place to fight him.

I think the opposite. After his imprisonment, the only place he can thrive is when he's enclosed. It's the open world in which he struggles. This is a reflection of the reasons for Dae-Su's imprisonment in the first place - his selfishness and ignorance of the world beyond himself.

Pretty sure he has the opposite, Agoraphobia. Being in a closed space for so long, would actually be where feels most comfortable, it's all he knows. Its what he thrives in. A more reasonable assumption would be that he developed a fear of open spaces after being confined for so long. It's like when prisoners are released after being locked up for 20 years. Alot of times they have a fear of open space, of freedom.

Love this fight scene. First he gets his ass beat by sheer numbers surrounding him from all sides, then, through trickery, he gets them all in one direction so they can only go one at a time and he beats them down one by one. And all in one smooth shot from the side. Beautiful.

I read somewhere that he really did twist his ankle and just tried to go with it. He fucked up the uppercut, overbalanced and went over on his ankle. Youi can see him go down in a totally unnatural way. Can even hear him shout in pain

There are about 3 different ways this scene would be iconic on their own.
1. Making a 1 v Many fight look so realistic
2. Shooting an entire fight scene in a single take (See Tony Jaa for more info on that)
3. Cinematography
Any one of those on its own would have made this scene memorable.
But all 3!? Incredible.

The main actor Choi Minsik is still growing as an actor even though he's already one of the top movie actors in Korea. He personally went see a young Korean comedian who had zero experience in acting for films after watching a comedy sketch he did just to learn how he made his character for the show.
