BOY
Ayelle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He used to see stars in my eyes
I wonder what he sees now
I used to eat his words like fruit
And I always had an appetite

Two starving souls in the limelight
Of the scene that we set ourselves
And we played it all out

That boy don't love me no more
So I've had to love myself
Somehow, but I'm doing okay

Hm, now
That boy don't love me no more
So I've had to love myself
Somehow, but I'm doing okay, hm

(Love me, boy)
(Love me no more)
(Love me, boy)
(Love me no more)

I died at his hands a thousand times
And he drank the poison
He heard what I said a thousand times
While I lost my voice
Had to live off of him
And I tried to
I tried

Two starving souls in the limelight
Of the scene that we set ourselves
And we played it all out

(Oh I stepped down)
(But I planned to step by)

That boy don't love me no more
So I've had to love myself
Somehow, but I'm doing okay

(Love me, boy)
(Love me no more)

(Love me, boy)
(Love me no more)

Overall Meaning

Ayelle's song "Boy" is a soulful yet heart-wrenching track that expresses the emotions of a girl who was once deeply in love with a boy. The first verse starts with the reminiscence of their past relationship, where the girl felt like stars were in her eyes because of the boy's presence. However, the second line of that verse indicates that the girl is now uncertain about what he sees in her eyes, implying a distance between them. The girl then reminisces about how she used to crave the boy's words, but now things have changed, signified by her wondering how he feels like she eats his words.

The next part of the song describes the relationship between the two, indicating that they were like two starving souls in the spotlight, and everything played out on the stage that they set for themselves. The girl lived off the boy, and in return, she tried to give him everything she could- love, care, and intimacy. However, after all the efforts, things fell apart, and the boy decided to move on.

The chorus then repeats that the boy doesn't love her anymore, which pushed the girl to love herself instead. Despite going through such pain, she still feels like she is doing okay. In the second verse, the girl reveals how she died a thousand times at the hands of the boy. The boy then drank poison, and she lost her voice, hinting at how she couldn't express her feelings correctly.

Before the last chorus starts, the girl expresses how she planned to stick beside the boy, but things didn't work out. The repetition of the chorus drives the message of the song home, highlighting how the girl had to love herself after the boy stopped loving her.
