Dreaming
Ayla D'lyla Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We dance to the tunes
Staring at the moonlight
When I wake up
Itโ€ฒs only me in the room

You get me going
That's a dangerous thing
I cannot breathe
Am I dreaming?
Donโ€ฒt come close to me
Don't know what's real
Am I sleeping?
Stuck in a lucid dream

Your shadow in my room
Always coming back at midnight
When itโ€ฒs only me and you
[?] Itโ€ฒs all untrue

You get me going
That's a dangerous thing

I cannot breathe
Am I dreaming?
Donโ€ฒt come close to me
Don't know whatโ€ฒs real
Am I sleeping?
Stuck in a lucid dream

I dream
I am losing memories
What we could be
Nightmares that I'm seeing
But you were never there

I cannot breathe
Am I dreaming?
Donโ€ฒt come close to me
Don't know what's real
Am I sleeping?
Stuck in a lucid dream
I cannot breathe
Am I dreaming?
Donโ€ฒt come close to me
Donโ€ฒt know what's real

Am I sleeping?
Stuck in a lucid dream

Overall Meaning

In the song Dreaming by Ayla Dโ€™lyla, the lyrics express an ambiguity that suggests the confusion and disorientation that could occur in a dream. The first stanza is mysterious yet vividly described, with the singer and the person he or she dances with under the moonlight - this could very well be a dreamlike impression. However, the second line hints at a perhaps more unsettling experience that the author is having, as we find out that when the author wakes up, he or she is alone in their bedroom, suggesting that the interaction with the person in the first stanza might have been imaginary.

The lyrics continue with "You get me going, that's a dangerous thing," which could mean that the person being addressed or the singer is causing confusion or even leading each other on. The chorus comes in with a mix of contemplation - "Am I dreaming?" and insecurity - "Don't come close to me, Don't know what's real." This indicates that the author is having difficulty distinguishing daydreams from reality.

The stanza after that muddies the water further, with the author reflecting on losing memories, what could have been, and nightmares that may very well be genuine. The song ends with a repeat of the chorus's last lines, suggesting that the author remains stuck in their state of confusion.
