Mercedes
Ayo River Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To the party out on the westside
Me and all of my friends decided
We'd be better off as strangers
After Megan moved out to Denver
I came home to ashes and embers
Started swiping left on Tinder
And fantasized about my funeral
I was introduced to a lady
When she crashed her brand new Mercedes
Through a red light, straight into me
She screamed and asked are you alright
So I said, well, thanks for asking
At this point I don't care what happens
We stood there causing the traffic
And laughed and had ourselves an awkward hug
Who says you can't go home again?
It's all just something someone said
My eyes can only document
So much before they close again
People come, people go
No one really knows
Going out on the town
Till we drown our woes
Who says you can't go home again?
It's all just something someone said
My eyes can only document
So much before they close again
The song "Mercedes" by Ayo River is a melancholic yet reflective piece that revolves around the theme of change and moving on from the past. The lyrics start off with the singer feeling left out since he and his friends weren't invited to a party on the west side. The group then decides that it's better if they remain strangers. The singer reflects on his recent breakup with Megan and how he is left with nothing but the ashes and embers of their relationship. He then turns to Tinder to distract himself, even going as far as fantasizing about his own funeral.
The second verse sees the singer meeting someone new, who crashes her brand new Mercedes into his car. Despite the accident, the two manage to strike up a conversation, and the singer finds himself having an "awkward hug" with the lady. The chorus then repeats the idea that "you can't go home again" and that everything is just "something someone said," before ending with the introspective realization that our eyes can only document a limited amount before they eventually "close again."
