Things Fall Apart
AyokAy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The thinking bus know the way shit haunts
Like you swore you'd never be the one to smoke down cigarettes
But then it strikes you when you obsess
You say you wanna change, but you don't try
You don't wanna say what's on your mind
Smoke down and your heart won't feel the rest
He won't care 'til you undress
But don't think you own
Anything that can't explode

Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Of who you are and everything you've ever known
Things Fall Apart

When the street lights low
And you pull out your phone
Now you're looking for anyone to spend the night
'Cause loneliness has an appetite
Sometimes you fail to think, you're going blind
But now you're watching life from the outside
When you're caught up on a lifestyle of the rich
Life will turn you to a hypocrite

But don't think you own
Anything that can't explode

Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Of who you are and everything you've ever known
Things Fall Apart

Da, da, da-da-da-da
Da, da, da-da-da-da
Da, da, da-da-da-da
Da, da, da-da-da-da

But don't think you own
Anything that can't explode

Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Things Fall Apart
Don't let go
Of who you are and everything you've ever known

Things Fall Apart (ah)
Things Fall Apart (ah)
Things Fall Apart (ah)
Everything you've ever known

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for AyokAy's song "Things Fall Apart" seem to revolve around themes of insecurity, addiction, and the struggle to maintain a sense of self-identity in the face of societal pressures. The opening lines, "The thinking bus know the way shit haunts/Like you swore you'd never be the one to smoke down cigarettes" suggest a sense of regret and disappointment in oneself for giving in to temptation and addiction. The line "He won't care 'til you undress" could represent a sense of being objectified or used by others who don't care about one's true self.

The lyrics also touch on the desire to change oneself, and the sense of frustration that can come when this change doesn't happen as quickly or easily as one might hope. The line "You say you wanna change, but you don't try" suggests a sense of apathy or resignation, and the lines "But now you're watching life from the outside/When you're caught up on a lifestyle of the rich/Life will turn you to a hypocrite" suggest a sense of dissatisfaction with the social expectations and pressures placed on individuals.

Overall, the song seems to be urging listeners not to let go of their true selves and the things they hold dear, even when faced with difficult circumstances or societal pressures.

Smoke down and your heart won't feel the rest
He won't care until you undress

But don't think you own

Of who you are and everything you've ever known

And you pull out your phone
Now you lookin' for
Anyone to spend the night
Cause loneliness has an appetite

Everything about this track is so intricate. The way the guitar tracks are woven together with one overlapping then switching to the lyrics and the cadence/melody. Such a great song. Probably my second favorite behind sleepless nights.

Definitely one of my favorite artists that produces consistently good music! True artistry in a world that seems without originality.
