Chasing Time
Azealia Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Damn nigga damn, took a chance on ya, double and dipped again)
Go!
You could do your dance
Take a chance with your lover like this began!
Sing

I want somebody who can take it apart
Stitch me back together make me into who I wanna be
But all you ever do is sit in the dark
Dealing with the Devil, you ain't never ever gonna be mine

'Cause I'm born to dance in the moonlight
I feel like spending my nights alone
I try to give you a little more space to grow
White lies, I don't wanna be around anymore
I'm through giving, I've got to go

Am I chasing time?
'Cause I wasted all mine on you (you)
Am I chasing time? (time)
'Cause I wasted all mine on you (you)

Check my watch, I had the future in my pocket
But I lost it when I gave it to you (you)
If tomorrow drops, I had my time right in my locket
But I lost it when I gave it to you (you)

Damn, nigga, damn
Took a chance on you, double and dipped again
And, scram, nigga, scram
Hit your mans up and tell 'em to get the van
And reminiscing can't
Bring it back to the cabin in Michigan
But man, this the plan
Say goodbye to your lover cause this the end

'Cause I'm born to dance in the moonlight
I feel like spending my nights alone
I try to give you a little more space to grow
White lies, I don't wanna be around anymore
I'm through giving, I've got to go

Am I chasing time?
'Cause I wasted all mine on you (you)
Am I chasing time? (time)
Cause I wasted all mine on you (you)

Check my watch, I had the future in my pocket
But I lost it when I gave it to you (you)
If tomorrow drops, I had my time right in my locket
But I lost it when I gave it to you (you)

Yo, get lost hit the highway, freeway
We've been off-course like the wrong-way relay
Need me a boss, you're a constant delay
These the kinda thoughts I've been having for three days
Feel like you're more of a homie
Please, you don't even know me
You think I'm starting new relations
I'm just departing and need my space and
Time to myself, ventilation
No time for you, I lack the patience
And you're like, "Girl, how you do that?"
My attitude is bitchy but you already knew that
And since we can't get along
I think we should both move on
(Go!)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Azealia Bank's song "Chasing Time" revolve around the themes of heartbreak, self-empowerment, and moving on. The opening lines, "Damn nigga damn, took a chance on ya, double and dipped again" highlight the pain of betrayal and the frustration that comes with giving someone another chance only to be let down once more. The chorus "Am I chasing time? 'Cause I wasted all mine on you" underscores how investing too much time and energy into a relationship that just causes pain can be ultimately unfulfilling.

The verses suggest an overwhelming sense of dissatisfaction with the relationship. Azealia sings "I want somebody who can take it apart, Stitch me back together make me into who I wanna be," conveying a desire to have her partner enhance her life instead of detracting from it. The lines "But all you ever do is sit in the dark, Dealing with the Devil, you ain't never ever gonna be mine," express feeling like her partner is emotionally unavailable and caught up in shady dealings.

The rap verse in the middle serves as a final goodbye to the relationship as Azealia takes back control: "And since we can't get along, I think we should both move on." She recognizes the need to prioritize her own growth and mental health.

Overall, "Chasing Time" is a song about letting go of a relationship that hasn't been working out and recognizing that sometimes it's better to move on even if it means being alone.

Azealia Banks is SO far ahead of these mainstream artists.

First off, she produced this album herself because she cares very much about her fanbase and Interscope weren't letting her do as she pleased. She took it into her own hands and created such a phenomenal album, a feat that these mainstream artists could not do independently.

Secondly, her album is so diverse and each song has a deep meaning. The only reason why some people have problems with her rapping is because you actually have to study her lyrics and analyze her flow and every rhyme, unlike some artists (Iggy, to be specific) who are so generic in their raps. People would rather listen to basic rap music with someone else singing the chorus because they don't want to go through the trouble of actually analyzing the lyrics when rap, in my opinion, supposed to be studied. They just want something catchy and easy to sing/rap to.

Thirdly, Azealia's attitude "is bitchy, but you already knew that". She's a strong, independent artist who left her label because they were preventing her from do what she wanted to do with her OWN album. She doesn't give two shits about anyone who comes for her because she will shut them down and move on with her life. She's unique for her attitude because she only has her fans and herself to hold her down. When Snoop Dogg came for Iggy, people were all over that. When T.I.'s below-mediocre ass came for Azealia, nobody really heard about it. Her fans, including myself, will hold her down and commend her for her attitude because she has to be strong as an independent artist.

Lastly, for all of those who are just finding out about Azealia, please look into Broke With Expensive Taste because I guarantee you that it will grab your attention if you liked "Chasing Time". If you're here to talk shit about Azealia, find your log out button and leave YouTube because you can't come for Azealia when she's doing her thing independently and you favor a mainstream artist who has everything handed to them, including lyrics cough. And, please, DO NOT compare Azealia to Nicki Minaj or Iggy Azalea because they are not on the same plane as Azealia Banks; when you're mainstream because you make basic raps for basic people, you cannot be compared to someone with deep lyrics, perfect rhyme patterns and alliteration, and a unique rap flow. Yes, I referred to Iggy earlier, but that was to show the difference between mainstream rap and actual rap.

Azealia is, by far, the ONLY artist (notice how I said "only artist", not "only female artist" because Azealia is better than most of the male artists who only rap about sex, drugs, money, and what they got or didn't have before) to give me an album where I can have it on repeat for days. If I need a song with a deep meaning, I listen to "Soda" or "Idle Delilah". If I need a song with a sick beat and unique flow, I listen to "JFK" or "Miss Camaraderie". If I need to dance my ass off, I listen to "Gimme a Chance" or "Chasing Time". If I want to hear Azealia's beautiful vocals, I can listen to all of the songs I just mentioned and more. Who else can rap and sing live and without autotune? ....... I'll wait for an answer.

@guitarheroziplock

Randolph Lyons nicki gets trash talked because she either A. Makes a lot of sexual music B. Talks about some of the same things a lot or C. Switched to pop/too much pop influence for a rapper.

How is azealia any different? She does ALL of that especially the first one.

The only reason Nicki gets shit on is because she's an extremely popular woman and people love to root for the underdogs (Iggy, angel haze, azealia). The same shit happened when Kim was poppin and even before that with queen latifa and then way later with like Eve.

Nicki makes serious music with a message that can deeply impact her fans OR she can make fun silly music to just him or dance to and there's nothing wrong with that so fuck right off.

-a straight 20 year old male

@guitarheroziplock

Randolph Lyons apparently sexual orientation does matter seeing as "Nicki only makes music for high school bottoms"?

She started from rap, made a hip hop album, made ONE pop/dance album (re released it with more hip hop/rap songs), and now she's making another rap/hip hop album. I fail to see how a single venture (that she dominated) into another format invalidates her catalogue?

Nicki has done over a hundred guest features and raps on basically every single one. Even outrapping established male rappers, so I don't know where that claim of her not rapping enough came from.

Don't let her party songs like anaconda, super bass, starships, etc. Make you think that she doesn't pour her heart out on her music. Its unfortunate she doesn't release those personal songs as singles but ignoring their existence is foolish.

Her brand is a monster but so is she, and I can respect that.
